Not a center, pretty close otherwise though.Original Kessel trade comes to mind too.
It's close in a lot of ways, but as you said he was 6 years older. Seguin is probably the closest, but really what I'm getting at is the return is going to be hard to peg down because we don't have many, if any, true comparables. 20 year old proven franchise centers just don't get traded. I think if they put him on the open market, the bidding war would be insane.Oh how could I forget the ultimate comparison, Mr. Jumbo Joe. Unhappy in Boston, criticism from Boston media after an early playoff exit and a 1st overall center. 8 years with Boston but otherwise a similar situation.
Would love Matthews on the Coyotes but the team may be worse off after trading what it would take to land him. If it was to happen it should have included the 5th overall - and TO would have taken one of the D.
Lets assume the cost is 4 1st rounds - Strome, Chychrun, Crouse and 2019 1st (* not enough)

I think JT is only using Toronto as leverage and will sign back with the Islanders.
You are seriously dreaming if you think Matthews can force the Leafs hand and get traded for peanuts. JFJ isn't with the Leafs anymore, it's Shanahan with a brain.Nope. 1 Bob McKenzie tweet is all it takes "Auston Matthews has let it be known he won't sign/he'd welcome a trade, Arizona remains his preferred destination"
Blam, a good chunk of his paper trade value obliterated. The Coyotes can then put the value equivalent of 4 1sts in usable assets on the table and see if the Leafs take it.
Seriously?? If someone proposed that for either of OEL or Keller what would your reaction be? Matthews costs you OEL plus at a minimum.Leafs sign Tavares trade Mathews to AZ for Dvorak, Chychrun, and a conditional pick ???
You have to give to get. What are we giving?I'll happily take both.
Because of acquisition cost I'm assuming? He has mentioned several times how hard it is to acquire centers, you'd have to think if Matthews is available he'd at least look into it.You guys are all forgetting one thing... John Chayka is our GM.
He's not going to pursue Matthews. Period.
Diet isn’t specialized enough. Shows lack of discipline. Barrett Hayton doesn’t eat anything that casts a shadow.True, Matthews isn't sticky enough.

Jets are scrambling for cap space to re-sign Stastny. We should swoop in to take Myers off their hands.
Toronto isn't trading Mathews period, under almost any circumstance to anyone for anyone. One of the best, top 5, young players and a 1C on an ELC, he won't get traded. Babcock and Mathews will kiss and make up. Now if Mathews refuses to play and sits out a year, that could force Toronto's hand, and that isn't happening.Acquisition cost is the primary reason. Chayka is an asset hoarder and he obviously plays the long game (see: his pick of Barrett Hayton). The only way he'd even consider going after Matthews is if the Leafs were selling him low, and that isn't going to happen. But the other reason is our budget. We don't have the money to pay both OEL and a guy like Matthews. Until we get new ownership, we're going to have to make do with young talent or older, midrange talent on favorable deals.
