Post-Game Talk: 2013 NHL Entry Draft - The BoHo Era Begins

All 3 would likely make the WJC too if they're actually available and not with the Canucks.

How would you say Horvat and Gaunce compare? The question's been asked a few times today and I've had trouble trying to come up with a good answer. Similar players but Horvat superior in practically every aspect except maybe shot and size?

There's always been the question of Gaunce's offense and how much of it was because he's just a bigger dude dominating the competition.

The thing I like about Horvat is he generated a lot of offense while also being his team's shutdown center.

I'm pretty happy with the draft today, lots of compete in all the players and a good mix of skill and sandpaper along with some safe and some risky picks.
Horvat and Cassels are pretty safe bets although Cassels ceiling is much lower,I'm kinda thinking he could be a Nathan Smith kind of pick but he could run with increased offensive responsibilities this season and surprise.
Really liking what Horvat brings and there's still lots of room to grow.

Shinkaruk and Subban are riskier and I'm not sure if MG takes Shinkaruk if he were our only first round pick but with two firsts, you can take a gamble on someone like him.If the NHL cracks down on the obstruction, muggings, and blatant stickwork in the defensive zone then he should be a real force. He reminds me a bit of Taylor Hall although not as fast.

Cedarholm is the type of safe player you nab in the later rounds, good defensive defenceman with bite who can handle puck and get it out of the zone with team possesion and Liberate is a skilled PMD who needs time to develop to really assess his game but could turn out to be another gem from the OHL.

Williamson I have no idea about, the pick looks pretty suspect but I'm hoping for something encouraging about him to surface.

Sure feels nice for the Canucks to have one of the better drafts. It's been awhile since there was something positive to say about almost all the picks.

I think Vancouver, Buffalo, Dallas, and Montreal had unreal drafts.

If anyone follows the mock drafts forum, San Jose trading up for Muller made my day. A certain poster there would lambaste anyone who ever had the Sharks taking a dman in round 1....they traded up for one LOL. I thought Doug Wilson horribly mismanaged his picks.

I think the Canucks quietly started a rebuild today.
I can see that. Not a full rebuild but perhaps a re-tooling, a re-defining of the core players perhaps.

Where have you been!? You and Tiranis, some of our more knowledgeable posters about the draft gone on draft day! What is this blasphemy?

Was nice not being around for it and just catching up after the fact (I looked for the first time after we picked Subban). Feel like it gave me a bit of a cooler head to evaluate with.

I guess that's another way to look at it. :)

My hands were still shaking when i was typing up stuff about Horvat. I don't think i recovered until the 21st pick. Then the countdown to Shinkaruk happened and it started all over again. Emotional day for sure.

The more I read on Shinkaruk the more this seems like a major steal, sounds like we got two top 10 picks in the 1st round.

I honestly believe Gillis is trying to build a team that is good enough to make the playoffs year in and year out while hoping that one year it all just clicks and things go our way.

Yeah, this draft has set us up for that perfectly. Horvat and Shinkaruk should be coming through right when the Sedins and Burrows retire. They both fill massive holes in our future planning. I really don't think we would have lucked in to a centre prospect like Horvat without giving up something of significant value.

Ignore the lines, but this is how old we will be in 3 years:

Booth(31)-Kesler(31)-Kassian(25)
Shinkaruk(21)-Horvat(21)-Burrows(35)
Sedin(35)-Sedin(35)-Jensen(23)
Higgins(33)-Gaunce(22)-Hansen(30)
Schroeder(25)

That's decent, and that assumes none of our later round picks make it. Ideally you want another top line forward, but you have another 3 drafts to get that.

You should have seen how crazy it was when Shinkaruk fell to us. Everyone was freaking out that Gillis might not take him.

I'm glad we don't have Nonis in charge. Gauthier... Rest of the draft looks poor too.

Since I'm just catching up: not suprised Dano went in the 1st, figured somebody would have him rated higher. Surprised where Erne and Zykov went.

I said at the time of the Shinkaruk pick that they should have taken Erne, simply due to how the game continues to be called. HS was the clear BPA though. Will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

I've been reading a lot on hfboards about Hunter Shink, and in typical fashion he's being knocked for being a ******, soft, arsehole, small, easy to push around etc etc..

but if you go back just before the draft this kid was talked about in no such manor and considered a very real offensive threat. Most mocks had him going a lot earlier then #24.

seems this is pick is another reason to just crap on the Canucks, but I couldn't be happier.

TBH I was apprehensive about Shinkaruk with the way he was falling,it really reminded me of the 09 draft and JS dropping down and how after four years of very uneven development,he's still a fringe NHLer.Also, someone on here posted that Shinkaruks interviews at the combine were'nt good so what was the problem? character issues? questionable attitude? bad breath? :D

I thought we might pass on him as well but by having that earlier pick and getting what looks to be a sure-fire NHLer in Horvat,we can take a bit of a risk on a faller like Shinkaruk who could be a real steal if he pans out.
