I wouldn't say Therrien screwed our PP because it was already pretty ineffective before he was hired. But he sure as hell hasn't improved it.

Therrien absolutely screwed the PP. There's no turd polishing that could possibly change that.

Giroux on the wrong side, Voracek on the wrong side, Provorov on the top unit, Ghost off the top unit, Hayes on the top unit, and many more. These are all things that are individually unacceptable and once combined are beyond belief.

It's hard to imagine someone doing worse. Worst part is our idiot head coach and idiot GM supported it.

Considering the Flyers PP was the 10th worst in 40 years with at least 10 games played in a playoff season, this is beyond f***ing stupid.

The balance between releasing information and what is ongoing behind the scenes is open to conjecture. This is the GM's latest:

Patrick accepts Flyers' qualifying offer, setting up next step for 2020-21

“Before camp, Nolan will come back into town and he’ll be able to see our medical people and skate with our group and then proceed into training camp," Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said last weekend. "Right now, he’s doing well. He continues to feel better. He was in [Brandon, Manitoba] a couple of weeks ago, spent two weeks there skating with a group run by Ryan White, he was scrimmaging. Out there every day working out and he continues to progress and feel good. You can’t predict the future, but certainly all signs are progressing the right way."
Nice to see some guarded optimism regarding Nolan in his effort to overcome this health challenge. It's heartening to see his determination.

Are you seriously trying to defend him? Listen ... I’m not an analytical guy or try to pretend I’m played hockey BUT as a guy who gets drunk and watches the Flyers. ... it’s not hard to realize that He totally f***ed up moving G off the left half wall and not moving him back. Let alone the choice of D running the power play. I may fall into the eye test group but through my drunk eyes, he completely screwed our PP

Sigh... theres always one. Or two usually, in our boards case.

It was top 10 in ExGF for years before Therrien arrived and then it plummeted. In years past even when they werent scoring, the chances had been there. Under Therrien, they could barely must up a scoring chance. He f***ed it.

Remember this? ;)

The best part about Therrien is that the entire board is united in their hatred of him. There are no sides with this one.

It plummeted when Hextall brought in Knoblauch. Therrien so far may be even worse than Knoblauch, but Knoblauch was pretty bad too. He was the one who screwed our PP.

2013-14: xGF/60: 7.28 (5), GF/60: 7.17 (6) - G/Simmonds/Kimmo/Voracek/Hartnell; Streit/Lecavalier/Schenn/Read/Downie/Couts

PP Goals:
2019-20: G (7), Provorov (7), TK (5), Couts, Voracek, Hayes, JVR, Niskanen (4)
2018-19: Couts (8), JVR (8), Simmonds (5), Voracek, JVR, Ghost (4)

2013-14: Simmonds (15), Hartnell (9), Voracek (8), Lecavalier (8), G (7), Streit (4), Schenn (4)

2019-20: PP1 (27), PP2 (20)
2018-19: PP1 (23), PP2 (17)
2017-18: PP1 (39), PP2 (15)
2016-17: PP1 (45), PP2 (9)
2015-16: PP1 (39), PP2 (14)
2014-15: PP1 (50), PP2 (10)
2013-14: PP1 (40), PP2 (18)

Hard to draw conclusions, but here are some thoughts:
1) xGF and GF diverge in 3 of the past four season, with scoring worse in two but better last season, fluke?
2) having a top PP goal scorer doesn't mean a better PP, the best PP, 2014-15, spread the wealth
3) getting the 2nd unit humming helps a bit, while they play only 1/2 to 1/3 the minutes of the first unit, some years they were MIA

Just out of curiosity, do you have one for the 2nd PP unit too? Just would be nice to see.
I actually have no idea if there’s a way to find them separated.

For this, I just used Giroux’s on-ice PP stats (not his individual stats) since he’s been the one 100% constant on the top PP unit and hardly missed any games.

I’d do the same for the 2nd unit, but we don’t have anyone who’s been consistently on that unit for the last 8 seasons.

Replacing Ghost and Simmonds with Provorov and TK is the major change last year.
The biggest change seems to be having Voracek shoot less and make better shots.

Not sure why it would boost GF/60, let's look at SH%, ordered by shot attempts (20+):
2019-20: G (13.46%), Provorov (17.95), JVR (10.81), Voracek (11.76), Couts (11.76), Niskanen (15.38), Hayes (17.39), TK (22.73), Ghost (5.00)
2018-19: Ghost (6.15%), Voracek (6.90), G (3.64), JVR (19.05), Couts (19.51), Simmonds (12.82), Lindblom (6.90, Provorov (0.0), Patrick 5.00)
2017-18: Ghost (8.14%), Voracek (7.46), Simmonds (18.03), Couts (13.46), G (19.57), Provorov (6.90)
2016-17: Voracek (5.38%), Schenn (21.79), G (7.58), Ghost (3.17), Simmonds (26.23), Provorov (0.00)
2015-16: Voracek (1.33%), G (8.70), Ghost (12.31), Simmonds (23.64), Schenn (21.57), Streit (6.06), Couts (9.57)
2014-15: Voracek (16.92%), G (21.88), Schenn (12.73), Simmonds (25.93), Streit (8.00), Lecavalier (4.17)
2013-14: Voracek (10.53%), G (11.11), Simmonds (25.00), Hartnell (17.65), Kimmo (2.17), Streit (10.00), Lecavalier (21.62), Schenn (16.67)

Thoughts:
1) once upon a time, Voracek was a dangerous high volume shooter, but them were the days
2) Streit and Kimmo shoot a lot less than Ghost and were more "QBs" of the PP, so Fletcher may not be off the mark there
3) Under Therrien, everyone shot at a pretty high %, one player could be a fluke, both units suggest a deliberate strategy to work for better shots
