We saw it with Skjei his sophomore season.

Pionk was thrown into the fire last year. He played too many minutes on a crappy team and against players that can make good dmen look bad.

What kind of player will Pionk be when he's 26? 28? He absolutely is expendable but I think he gets a bad rap from a lot of guys here.
I just don't see much that will make him a staple on this team. Sure he will be an NHLer but he's hardly anyone I would want to keep for the long term. If anyone wants him, they can have him.

@bernmeister suggests massively complex trades. @RangerBoy says "no" to each one. I'd listen.

Bernmeister: Hello everyone! I am so happy and honored to be here. Thank you Amazing Kreiderman for having me here and thank you RangerBoy for joining me. I would like to begin by proposing Zib plus plus plus or maybe Zib Kreid plus plus or Zib Kreid Pio plus to Colorado for Landy and Jost plus plus minus. Then I further propose we trade Jost plus to Canes for Nieder plus plus. Boo moves up to 1st line center. Try to follow my reasoning, the plan is threefold...

RangerBoy: No. No. No no no. Also, no. Landeskog? Niederreiter? Overpaid and mediocre. Respectively. Wingers. Rangers? Centers. Depth up the middle. Talent up the middle. Centers. Boo? Poo.

Bernmeister: If you would allow me to explain...

RangerBoy: No. Delusional thinking. Waste of time. Mental sharts. Boo? Please.

Bernmesiter: You've yet to use a single verb...

RangerBoy: Verbs? Seriously? Verbs? For suckers. (RangerBoy then transforms into a motorcycle and runs over AK on his way out of the studio.)

I would pay to listen to that.

I don't dislike or like Pionk.

If he could improve his gap control, his stick, his timing all around to try to deny entries and become more of a right outside of the zone defender I think that would help him immensely. Once in his zone, I'm not sure there is much hope there. Offensively I think he could be a puck rusher, if he could make choices a little quicker I think there is some break out of the zone ability. He's not very quick to pick up on passing options though and there I'm not sure there is much hope either.

My concern, the Rangers may like him more than they should.

Yes, but it's not like he was eating all of them.

Playing with Staal didn't help matters at all (since they're both incompetent at moving the puck), but he was bad no matter what kind of competition he was facing. He gets a bad rap because hes a bad player, he had less production at even strength than Staal did last year. DeAngelo doubled him up despite playing in fewer games.

So if he isn't good defensively, offensively or in assisting transition, what exactly can he do?

I feel that those concerns should be grouped with talk of fears that the rangers will go off the board at #2. I have faith in the people running the team. they see what you are seeing. they aren't going to keep a lesser player in the lineup in the long run

He can be a 3rd pairing Right Handed dmen who's a PP specialist in this league. Expectations for a 23 year old dmen shouldn't be that high. It's the hardest position on the ice to play and we've seen plenty of dmen go through years of growing pains before they know what they're doing on a consistent level. Especially offensive dmen.

You also have to factor in the entire team play. New guys. Different coach. Different system. I'm not saying we should be patient with him and let him develop. ADA is superior in every aspect and I think Fox will be better than him in no time as well.

What I'm trying to point out is Pionk can very well have a long career in this league, despite his mediocre season as a 23 year old kid.

I hope so, yet last season did not fill me full of trust concerning the D. It may just be lack of information causing the disconnect, yet, to put it one way, I trust they think they are doing the right thing, I'm not so sure I trust, or have faith in their perspective of the right thing.

last year there were lack of options/depth. plus quinn was trying to teach ADA a lesson, not because quinn hates him like some people think, but IMO because he sees the potential upside. as more kids like fox arrives and there is more depth and options that will change if pionk and ADA's play don't improve accordingly.

He wasn't very good on the PP either. Started hot, then completely cooled down to the point where he was taken off of it.

The struggles for smallish offensive defensemen are usually in their own end, particularly along the walls but there are certain things that one should be able to do from the get go (make a clean outlet pass, support the rush, etc.) Honestly if you're as small as he is and can't move the puck, you're really of no use in this league IMO.

I think his future lies in Europe where he'll do well on the bigger ice.

I'm not so sure I can agree with that.

Hate is not quite the word I'd use, but I do think he likes the other options in terms of perceived culture building better, and I'm not so sure he is alone in that as I feel Gorton shares that opinion.

DeAngelo being a non arbitration eligible RFA, Pionk a arbitration eligible player, while Fox is signed is also going to add an interesting wrinkle. As would any trade for Trouba.

If he was 27 and played the way he did last season, then I'd ultimately agree with you. I think a 23 year old has plenty of time to develop every aspect of his game. Whether he does or doesn't is something we'll see over time.

Disagree with this. You don't keep tabs on a guy, scout him, and eventually trade for him and then go "well I don't like how he fits in the perceived culture building".

Regardless of Quinn's feelings of him, Gorton and his scouts wanted the guy enough to scout him heavily and eventually trade for him.

If he was 27 and played the way he did last season, then I'd ultimately agree with you. I think a 23 year old has plenty of time to develop every aspect of his game. Whether he does or doesn't is something we'll see over time.

The problem is basically (or should basically be) that he's been passed by DeAngelo, he's probably going to be passed by Fox...he's basically the least upside right handed defenseman the Rangers have that's even worth talking about and that's without getting into talks about trading for someone.

At this point he has to show he has immediately and impressively improved his game or he should rightfully be on the outside looking in.

I have no problem trading him. I think it's a no-brainer. My argument wasn't why we should keep him.

Dying is easy
Comedy is hard.
Preliminary, but you may have missed your calling.

That said, good job on the gist and spirit of it, at least for a laugh.
And most of us, including me, usually appreciate a good laugh.

But many points off for mucking up the details.

I would pay to listen to that.
If that's the case, RB and I should put an act together.

I want to give you guys a quick update.

1. Our episodes usually hit 500-700 plays each. This one with Edge is close to 900 in the first 48 hours. This is amazing. Let's hope we can reach 1k!
2. @Edge and I have spoken about a follow up after the draft and I am very confident that will happen.
3. With the draft upon us, and the focus being on prospects in the coming weeks, I was thinking of inviting @Joey Bones to join us somewhere in July. If he wants to, of course ;)
4. The responses here have been amazing. Thanks so much. Seeing the plays hit those high numbers so soon is great to see. And I hope you guys share it with your friends. Edge was great, and gave some very interesting details and insight.

This sums it up pretty well. Add into the equation that we already have ADA ahead of him, Fox probably and Shattenkirk if he's here is better as well and it's a logjam that he's at the bottom of
