People are getting furious about RNH at 6M. Imagine at 8M. I would just ship him and Russell out for Zucker and Spurgeon.

This is actually hilarious.

It's like the Hall trade came back to bite us against the Devils, even though Hall didn't play.

And the Koskinen performance/contract was Chia leaving a fart on his way out of the room.

No idea what Manning is up to, but he's probably in an Edmonton parking lot somewhere dinging your cars up with shopping carts.

Hello darkness, my old..... nevermind.

The Koskinen extension decision was made by Oiler management as a group. Bob Nicholson already stated that upon the dismissal of Chiarelli. So in other words, the guys who made that decision are still around and won't get fired for it.

I just wanted to win this game so the Vegas game I'm going to on Sunday is slightly meaningful
too much to ask I guess

You sure you are going? All the Boeing 757max jets, and theres plenty flying in Canada are grounded until future notice. Airports everywhere are a gongshow right now. I mean more than usually.

I was really hoping the Oilers were going to do a big splash trade to take advantage of the situation in Ottawa.

Something around RNH + Pulj + 1st + Cap dumps

for

Stone + Dzingle

and its for the same reasons you are suggesting.. I feel RNH is going to be worth north of 8 million maybe even 9 million if he keeps up the PTS pace hes currently on. I see that his pace has really slowed down though.. hes no longer close to point per game he only has 58 points in 70 games. At the time though of the trade deadline he was much closer to point per game and this was really a break out year for him.

Being a life long Sens fan who just started cheering for the Oilers (live in Edmonton) I know Stone well and think he is exactly what the Oilers needed. I also think he would have considered signing here to play with Mcdavid. I think it was a missed opportunity. I don't care so much about Dzingle but he was having a break out year with Ottawa and I think his play style may have worked on Mcdavid's wing. Stone can carry his own line and I think would have been better suited playing with Draisaitl to give Edmonton a LETHAL second line.

Dzingle - Mcdavid - ???
Stone - Draisaitl - ???

With that said.... RNH can still be used as a trade chip to help bolster this team. He does have value.

** Just to justify the payment.. Dzingle went for two 2nd rounders. Its basically Stone for RNH straight up and then Pulj + upgrade the two seconds to a first for Dzingle and Ottawa taking our cap dumps... Stone (signed w/ Edmonton like he did Vegas) prob holds a little more value then RNH.. I think the value is there for this trade. Big hit to the Oilers but lets not forget we have to pay Pulj now and he will be on a one way taking up a roster spot. Sending him the other way would help us fit Dzingle in as well next year if he did well with the team.

Another option would have been to keep Pulj and swap him out for like yamamoto or something because I think Pulj could break out playing with Stone. No other reason then that.. but we would still need to figure out a way to get Dzingle under the cap over the summer.

This was more of a WIN NOW type trade right.. IE: make the playoffs this year. Its great that Edmonton has decided they don't want to trade their first round picks but if it were me.. I'd be looking for good NHL players that can contribute right now and build this team into a contender.. we already have our core that we drafted and traded for...

Mcdavid, Draisaitl, RNH, Larson, Sekera, Klefbom, Nurse

You know trading RNH for 2 wingers that can contribute right now would really bolster our top six and then we just have a 3C problem... it would really fix a lot of issues with the forward group. I also would not sign Chiasson to anything long term... he needs to show he can do it again.

Then our core looks more like this:

Mcdavid, Draisaitl, Stone (point per game elite two way), Dzingle (50 points right now), Larrson, Sekera, Klefbom, Nurse

and we are just that much closer to competing with teams like San Jose, Vegas, Calgary etc.,

Dzingle only has 8 points less then RNH right now to put this trade into perspective.

Ottawa would have made this trade because it is a homerun for them... as they could flip RNH for even further return of futures if they wanted. Or they could keep him as his contract is up right when they want to spend so they could sign him if they want or flip him at that time.

IE: right at the trade deadline they could have said to Vegas.. sorry we cant give you Stone.. BUT... we can give you RNH.. and maybe Vegas would have made the trade. In the end everyone is happy.

If we managed to keep Pulj during that trade...

Dzingle - Mcdavid - ???
Stone - Draisaitl - Pulj <--- I really think Stone could help this kid reach full potential.

Stone had Tkchuk living in his basement by the way, that's the kind of player/leader he is.

As you can see… this trade alone can almost give us a legit top 6 with a little luck.

But oh well.. this trade can never happen now... was a missed opportunity. But.. it can get the wheels spinning on potentially trading RNH in a similar situation for a similar type return with a similar effect on the team if the situation were to present itself in the future.

Both Drai and McD had almost 27 minutes last night I read. Crazy.
Both also had nearly 7 PP minutes. As well as Nuge. We didn't get a lot out of any of that and due to running the same guys every night. The trouble last night was they were up against a damn good shutdown pair that had an on game and was up for the challenge. This was one of those odd games where NJ has nothing to play for but you know they are playing hard not to be embarrassed by McDrai. Well, they certainly accomplished that.

All the questions are on the Oilers end. I thought McD and Drai had somewhat stubborn games trying to undress NJ instead of really taking plays that were there and grinding down. Drai to his credit did his usual bit to be hard on opponent D but Greene at age 36, and much smaller is supremely conditioned and handled everything thrown at him.

I didn't catch the pregame quotes. Did anybody note the Oilers looking past this game? Hard to imagine how they could, but Oilers.

Yes. We need to get rid of Klefbom. Klefbom is the problem. /s

But it makes perfect sense! :sarcasm: Team only has him and Sekera (in their NHL lineup) as defensemen that can move the puck worth a damn... Let’s trade him for another Russell, Larsson or Benning.

The team needs a #2 RD (someone that can push Larsson to second pair, another top 6 forward, and a rework of the bottom 6 next year. Other tweaks will have to come the following year.

P.S. and needs the entire Management purged but I’m talking realistic goals

I am glad I didn’t watch yesterday..
Saw the tilt between Lucic and Gabriel. Lucic looked either bored or gassed out, couldn’t tell lol. Gabriel is tough but he’ll be back in the AHL next season. He’ll have a story to tell for the rest of his life though

Larsson - absolute trainwreck of a game
Koskinen - absolute trainwreck of a game
Klefbom - butter soft wristers all night, can't take a slapper anymore?

How is it possible that for 13 years now, since the cup run, this team STILL takes certain games lightly and does not put in the effort? Losing hockey games happens, getting routinely outworked is inexcusable at this level.

A lack of talent often looks a lot like a lack of hard effort.

Lost in the Debacle last night is that Draisaitl was on one of the longest pts in games streaks of the NHL season and that is now done. He had a shot at the longest streak of any player all season.

So last night Drai gets setup around 4 times, has 3 shots on goal, and none of these particularly good feeds but he sets up others a dozen times and they don't cash.

Meanwhile the team is feeding Nuge constantly on the PP last night on a night where the puck was also falling to Nuge and he had 7 premium scoring chances and finished nil. Nuge also, somehow, has only one assist in his last 15 GP and while being on the top PP unit with McDrai EVERY game. How does that even occur? 1 assist in 15games?!

he made one pretty good pick in NZ to give his linemates a 2 on 1 that they did completely nothing with. just saying.

But that was no typical fight. 90 secs of sheer bareknuckle hell with two guys that can throw. Any of us would be in the hospital, not continuing to play in a game. Both were hurt too, and both admirably played out the game. Not as easy as it looks. How do you even grip a stick after a tossing fight like that? This was no average NHL fight. This was the best fight I've seen here in years.

That was definitely a big time tilt. Just a bummer that it seemed to give Jersey life that they sustained through the game. Plus that AHLer he fought was super proud of himself and hyped up and ended up with a point, lol. Entertaining for the fans, but overall for the team, ended up being a bit of a negative. Oh well though, at least Lucic did something. Lucic Hat Trick FTW ;)

Oilers were never winning this game. Not in this or any other universe.

Sucks how trained we are now for this kind of disappointment.

That's how it goes though, putting yourself into a position where you pretty much have to win every game. They've actually been on a decent run, but a huge letdown was inevitable, this team doesn't have the pieces to go on big time sustained run. What really killed this season was before, when we replaced our D that could make a pass with pylons. The hole we dug in those 2 months was impossible to get out of. Even without the injuries though, this is just a borderline wildcard team.

Well I'm glad if we get any effort or sweat out of Lucic at all so I'll take the fights and the hits. Not like he's doing a lot else. He is making some occasional chaos plays and creating loose pucks. As far as fine motor control that sure seems like a thing of the past. From a hand dexterity pov you would never know this guy was an NHL vet player with considerable career pts. That well is dried up.

But yeah, the fight was actually counterproductive in that it motivated the Devils bench more. Little Nugent hopper was excited about the fight and smiling on the bench but proceeded to get nothing done the whole game. I kind of laughed when the Devil elbowed him on the way to the Devils bench after Ryan was chirping something. Nugget hopper then takes the slashing penalty. Not like he was doing anything anyway. May as well sit in the penalty box. I kind of preferred that to him getting his typical garbage time point in last minutes of a done game.

After cooling down a bit, I can't really blame any individual player.
I blame the makeup of the team. We have many individual players that on any other team would be valuable pieces and many of their weaknesses would be overcome by most teams strengths.

This team has been built poorly, obviously.
There are good players here but chemistry and mental strength is an issue and an obvious lack of skill.

When they are on the same page, they are extremely dominant. But once mistakes start happening, trust in one another seems to fall apart, because you could visibly see how out of sync passes and set plays become. They run into each, like they don't where each other are on the ice.

We are big team and make slow decisions. Only our star players have the hockey IQ to see opportunities and exploit them, it is unfortunate we don't have the support for our stars.

I see many good pieces that will probably be run out of town but history has shown they have the talent to be successful elsewhere and that is because the other teams are better built.

So I pray that with all the research and interviews. The next GM is the best team builder available. Just a history of excellence everywhere they go with teams that they have been a part of building.

I will be very surprised if Katz does nothing with management this summer after last nights game.

That was probably the most embarrassed I've been as a fan of this team.
I might have to miss the next few games just to get the mind off hockey for a bit. Probably start a new hobby or something. The sad thing, I'm starting not to care whether they win or lose and I think I've been a very optimistic and loyal fan over the years.

Time to clean house in management, Mr. Katz. I think most fans won't believe you are serious about winning until you do.

I read the comments from the Oilers where they indicated that they took the Devils lightly. I dont know if this is a cliche answer and what else I guess is the players suppose to say but its kind of a meh statement. Generally speaking it does seem at times that the team thinks they are better than they are. Just seems a lack of urgency from the team, not just this game, but many others as well. The roster is obviously not good (outside of a few players) but I think you would like to see more effort throughout the lineup.

I thought Koskinen was brutal in some of the goals against. I know theres been some people who have been indicating that Koskinen lets in one stinker a game, and while I would say that its a bit of an exaggeration, I think theres some truth in it as well. Seems like he can make tough saves but struggles to make some easy ones at times. While I have generally liked Koskinen this year, I think the 3 year @4.5 mil contract is still a concern moving forward.

That was the most pathetic effort I have seen from this team in a long time. A must win game where a lot was on the line and they forgot to show up. That's it for this season, not like their chances were great but what a disgusting effort.

Nicholson picked the lesser of 2 evils when saying this. Either he admits that Chia had full authority to make that signing (when Chia was already considered for dismissal), or Nicholson admits that it was a group decision to sign Kosk (which makes it look like everyone is an idiot).

In hindsight they should have ran stolarz this game, Koskinen was fighting it all game for some reason. I wanted him replaced to start the second, but you kinda gotta run with a guy for a bit once he's in there. It wasn't all goaltending though, the entire team was trying to force the play too much, especially draisatl kept trying to go through 3-4 guys in the o-zone every time instead of making the simple plays like he has been.

Teams have games like this sometimes I guess, took the win for granted and just tried to force things. Oilers just couldn't afford it because of the hole they dug in the standings. Oh well.

Good fight by Lucic.

One thing I've noticed, and Remenda said the same thing a few games ago, is that Koskinen loves to keep the play live. Rather than just catch/smother/cover/whatever the puck to stop the flow of the game, he'd prefer to just push the puck somewhere to keep the play going. This usually ends up with clusterf*** of a situation in our zone since our D doesn't even know what to do with it.

It's one thing Talbot at least did that I appreciated.

It sucks we lost last night but at least we can get it back against the crap Coyotes. It’s the games after I’m worried about Vegas and Blues.
