1. Dark Souls
2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
3. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
4. Resident Evil 4
5. Metal Gear Solid 3 (48)
6. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
7. Splinter Cell
8. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (46)
9. Donkey Kong Country
10. Crash Bandicoot

I can't believe only 2 of my games made the top 50. I also can't believe I'm the only one who voted for a Splinter Cell game or a DKC game.

Or just the wrong genres?

No battlefield made the list, and Starcraft and Age of Empires 2 are the only RTS that made it (unless i missed 1)

KOTOR doesn't really have a comparable

KOTOR = Baldur's Gate x Mass Effect

more or less.

Planescape: torment, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights 2(on strength of modding community) etc could have made it if HF was more into isometric RPGs

Black Isle and Bioware pretty much control this genre

My list:
1) Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield (NR)
2) Fallout 2 (39)
3) Fallout 1 (NR) :shakehead
4) Gothic 2: Night of the Raven (NR)
5) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1)
6) Unreal Tournament 3 (NR)
7) Deus Ex (23)
8) Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (32)
9) Command & Conquer: Red Alert. (NR)
10) Civilization IV (31)

Who voted for Gothic 1?
I think it was just Zodiac and I who voted C&C Red Alert.

Biggest surprise for me that didn't make the top 50 was not a single Resident Evil game.

wooo! someone else with Red Alert. loved that game. the original C&C as well as Warcraft 2 would make my top 20 for sure ...and i think Fallout 1 and 2 probably would as well. i would take both of them over the newer Fallouts.

i think it was Fallout 2 during a mission called 'Made Man', where i was a hitman for this mafia type dude. anyway, long story short ...i ended up sleeping with his wife, then killing her and the family and then proceeded on stealing all of their goods from the safe and home.

i was like ....'yeah ...this is my type of game' ... .

and i was also disappointed with the new Fallouts how they wouldn't let you kill children. i was like ...'wtf! ...a Fallout game that's trying to be politically correct? no way!'.

i remember in the first Fallout some kid came along begging for some food, etc ...i opened up on him and literally cut him in half with a chain gun ...then proceed to loot his body, where all he had on him was 1 flower. i took it.

those were some badass games.

I liked the Single Player in C&C 1 more than RA. But RA Skirmish with the map editor and modem games were glorious.

I always went and murdered all the pick pocket kids in Fallout 2 cause that was one of the most annoying things anyone ever put in a game

I got some of those:
720905-uakm_box.jpg

It didn't make my list, but I love you for mentioning this, because I assumed no one else had ever heard of Tex Murphy (and boy am I excited about their kickstarter).

Well, here's my list, I've proven I'm the only person who deserves a ticket on the No. 9:

1.
tumblr_mfcnq7jRhX1s0unmfo1_500.jpg

Grim Fandango - one of the most original, beautiful, creative settings in any game, with the coolest main character of any game (in one year he turns a dumpy diner into Casino Calavera!). I am pretty sad NO ONE else had this on their list, I think it was the high point of adventure gaming.
2. Fallout 2 (41)
3. X-Com: UFO Defense (whoever included this is also my friend)
4. Baldur's Gate II (32)
5. Mass Effect (16)
6. Wing Commander 3 (seriously? no love for wing commander? are you all ****ing 20 year olds? Jesus, play a space opera for once in your life)
7. Civ IV (31)
8. Company of Heroes (biggest surprise to me not being on here)
9. Curse of Monkey Island voters (also new friends, whoever included this)
10. Brother's In Arms: Hell's Highway

The biggest surprise to me is that apparently no one else voted for Company of Heroes. In my mind it is both the best tactical RTS and best WWII game ever made, both in terms of game mechanics and art style (and how good it looks, RTS games should not have as much details as FPS games). I'm really really surprised not a single other person included this.

Also, you people need to buy computers and download stuff from GOG. I guess I'm the only person who didn't like Ocarina of Time, but I can think of at least five other games from 1998 that I enjoyed more than OoT. Also, wtf is Chrono Trigger?

I guess I'm also really surprised Fallout 3 is so high, I assumed everyone thought it was worse than New Vegas. Maybe that's a divide between people who played the originals or not, because I found Fallout 3 pretty boring (largely because there was very little of a society in that wasteland, whereas I thought New Vegas got back to the original in the number of characters with whom and locations that you had interactions). Neither were as good as 1 or 2, but NV at least felt more like it was in the same world to me. Seriously, you people who loved 3 need to go find FO2 on GOG or something...

Or if HF had more people who owned PC's/were alive in the mid-late 90s

Would you guys agree then that RA > RA2? Because I love RA2 but can't seem to get into the original.

I think RA is better than RA2 because RA2 is kinda where the C&C series went full on camp 4th wall breaking in on their own joke crap. The gameplay in RA2 was good and I played it a lot. I basically just Prism tank stomped everyone . Spies were also a ton of fun and using some of the cool Yuri mind control unit combinations.

Getting into the original is tough because many genre conventions had not been developed yet. Simple things like Unit queues weren't even around. There are some engine overhauls that add this functionality but I haven't experimented with those yet.

i never really played much of RA2 ...only briefly tried it out.

i kinda stopped playing RTS games after Starcraft and Age of Empires 2. i played a ton of them through the 90s, and for a time they were pretty well my favorite genre, but i just ended up getting kinda bored with them around 2000. they all started to be kinda the same thing over and over after awhile and i guess i had my fill.

over the last few years i bought a few of the newer C&C games as well as Starcraft 2 ...but haven't really played any of them, even though i have told myself on numerous occasions that i will get around to it ...still haven't.

This is one of those games that infuriates me that I've never been able to play. It came out before my family had a computer and by the time I warmed to computer games and had one that could actually play anything the damn game was impossible to find. I've tried less-than-legal versions, but none of them have worked properly. I've played the first hour or so a few times, but have never been able to make it past there.

I also want to apologize to the GE community. I had offered to write the Chrono Trigger writeup for Trap Jesus and then my work got insane and my wife wanted her husband.

I dropped the ball and I am sorry.

The fact that it was a LucasArts game certainly doesn't help ease that situation.

I know that if you can manage to find a copy of it there is a fan-made set-up utility and launcher that help it run on modern machines (and I found also running those in compatibility mode helped), and there's also ResidualVM which I haven't tried but is designed to run it (http://residualvm.org/). You still need the original data files though. But yeah, other than paying a not small amount on ebay or amazon, it's mostly just crossing your fingers that somehow it gets released on Good Old Games or Steam. Of course, I would say it's worth the $40 or whatever it would cost on ebay :)

I still have Grim Fandango disks ;) Holy crap was that great game. Hopefully now that Ipads, tablets, phones etc. and success of Walking dead we see more developers to make point&click games. Perfect genre for a indie since it doesnt require massive team, only great writer and graphic designer.

Red Alert 2 was a solid pick. Definitely top 25 for me. I probably should have tossed a vote to another computer classic, Roller Coaster Tycoon (only got one other vote)
