I used to care more, but the Sharks are never going to pick a consensus guy. Always going to be off the board haha so Id rather not learn about guys in the top 20 only to have em pick guy #39
Get into later round picks, Sharks do well there. It's more fun to speculate on finding the diamond in the rough than to be disappointed in the mediocrity they select in the first round.

2014: Goldobin (lol)
2015: More than anything wanted the Sharks to trade up for Provorov/Werenski, but when it got to our pick I wanted Rantanen

Seems like more often than not, the majority of this board has a better pick than who was actually picked

Do we actually have a source of what the board’s picks were at the time? Like, what our consensus pick was as a whole? It does feel like, since ~2013, we’ve been picking a better player than the Sharks have.

While we’re bragging about draft predictions, my greatest ever NHL draft call was the top-8 in 2013 (not my personal rankings, but a mock draft). I predicted:

1. Mackinnon
2. Barkov
3, Drouin

4. Nichushkin
5. Jones
6. Monahan
7. Nurse
8. Ristolainen

Obviously a big swing and a miss line on Nichushkin, but I’m still impressed by this.

Apropos of nothing other than this is the draft thread, man did the scouting staff shit the bed in 2013. Only one pick has played in the NHL, and no one else is going to, and that guy is Mueller. Ewwwwww.

Kinda related to the draft but not really. Decided to check in on the front office situation. Looks like Shin Larsson got a promotion to Supervisor of European Scouting. I don't remember seeing Ryan Russell, Michael Chiasson, or Nikolai Ladygin before so I'm assuming they're new scouts.

We came into that draft with 3 picks in the 2nd round. Only one of those picks was actually used by us (Kennedy,Mueller trade up) that player picked was Gabriel Paquin-Boudreau :thumbd:

I'm still annoyed with that trading up. There was no reason for it, it was the Sharks trying to outsmart themselves. At least the 2nd for Kennedy was OK at the time, it's just too bad he was injured most of the time with the Sharks.

I hardly follow the draft (in terms of depth and stuff), but I think is here is who I wanted:

2012: Teravainen
2013: Mantha
2014: don't remember
2015: Barzal
2016: n/a
2017: Yamamoto

100% haha Sharks go off the board for a hipster pick in 1st. Luckily clutch in rounds 4+

They clearly wanted Mueller and they thought Columbus would take him at 19. There was also the Everett connection between Murray and Mueller. Obviously SJ targeted the wrong guy. The fact that Detroit ended up taking Mantha made it feel even worse.

Thanks for clarifying. It certainly does look like the outsmarted themsleves as both Mueller and Murray are essentially bottom-pair material now, no one would have believed at the time as Murray was hyped. I assume it is the injuries that sidelined him.

I doubt Mantha was even on the Sharks radar as I remember there were rumors about attitude/maturity. I was hoping the Sharks would stand pat and draft Burakovsky at the time.
