What did Chiarelli do this offseason so far to take this team to the next level? Trading Ebs for a downgrade on the wing and re-signing Russell and Gryba is not going to cut it. Especially with Sekera out and Puljujarvi not being ready
It's June 27.

Yes after being gifted McDavid and Draisaitl and Nugent Hopkins as top 3 picks we need more centres, lol.

Maybe RNH should grow up and learn to not get embarrassed in a 1-on-1 center match up for a change. You were drafted no.1 overall for a reason and it wasn't to be baby sat by a veteran center in your 6th season.

Ugh, RNH is not a "shutdown" center and I'm sick of seeing him deployed as one. The smart move would be to move him to McDavid's line or my preference, Drai's line, so that he can focus on offense (which should be his real strength) instead of shoehorning him into a line driving shutdown role. Getting a decent 3rd line center would afford the Oilers so much more flexibility in their top 9.

Yeah, **** me for wanting the team to be improved right?
I'm genuinely curious though, what is so pressing? My must the team be revolutionized every offseason?

We had 103 points and the best goal differential in the division. Yes, we could be upgraded, but so could any team. What playoff team upgraded so far? From what I can see, most have downgraded. Unless you really, really loved Eberle, I don't see what's so alarming so far. Is it that the Flames are so aggressive? But with that, they are a team that had a lot of troubling stats last season, and imo were a prime target to probably miss next season unless they did something.

Since this should be in this thread and not the Mcdavid thread what dor you guys think of Draisaitl+ Pouliot for Gallagher+Weber? This of course is going off the assumption Draisaitl is wanting 8M+ contract which we can't nor should want to give him. Gives us this team without any additions:

Maroon-Mcdavid-Gallagher
Lucic-RNH-Puljujarvi
Caggiula-Strome-Kassian
Slepyshev-Letestu-Pakarainen

Klefbom-Weber
Sekera/Russell-Larsson
Russell/Nurse-Benning

Please note that Gallagher is probably good for 50-70 points playing with Mcdavid and is signed to a half decent contract @ 3.75M for the next 4 years. I'd be looking to add another winger or center at the deadline if Puljujarvi struggles. Cap hit should wash with us moving Pouliot in the deal as well. Could also look for retention from Montreal as a sweetener on the deal.

Yeah but at what point are you setting the bar so low for a player? C'mon Nuge. This is your SEVENTH season. We shouldn't have to shelter you like a damn sophomore player still and have to spend on top of your generous $6 million salary to bring in other players.

We should have be set at the center position for like 10+ years the moment that golden ticket came up.

Looks like propaganda from the Oilers ministry of information.

Why do you guys want to spend money in free agency anyway?

Someone please post the Ference, Pouliot, Nikitin, Fayne, signing threads where people where posters here were tap dancing in positivity here thinking they'd filled key holes.

It's probably a blessing if Chiarelli does not spend anything major on the free agent market. This year's market quite frankly sucks too.

It's his 7th season, that's exactly my point. It should be known by now that he's pretty much what he is. He needs to be sheltered, he is not a line driver and he's not a shutdown center. The Oilers have the elite talent to shelter him, lets try to maximize his abilities instead of turning him into something he's not.

Rishaug is in the know and he said the Oilers will be very quiet in free agency so I'll take his word for it

Everybody is saying the same thing. Dreger, Rishaug, Stauffer, Friedman. These guys have telegraphed Chia's moves all offseason from the Eberle/Strome trade to the Russell contract to drafting Yamamoto so I take their word as gospel. This is our roster unless something falls into Chia's lap.

I'm not willing to spend $3 million on top of the $6 million we're already spending on RNH to have a "babysitting center" for Nuge.

Sorry, but tough crap. Learn to win a face off. I actually prefer not bringing in someone to take hard draws, IMO it's a bad message to send that you'll just bring in a specialist to bail them out of taking draws.

No Connor, no Leon, no Ryan ... you have to learn to take and win these draws and that means putting in work and getting stronger in the weight room. No short cuts.

Well I thought we saved a bunch of money from the Eberle trade and now we're going to spend it on nothing? Why even trade Eberle in the first place for a downgrade?

The Oilers still have holes that need to be filled and counting on progression from everyone as well as complete team health is a failure of a strategy.

Stauffer at least has mentioned that nameless potential RW Vet though.

Why? Chia has been about as secretive as any GM, why assume Rishaug knows ****?

His tweets regarding the Oilers have been spot on. Foretold Russell and Gryba signings.
Now him and Spector are saying the Oilers will be quiet in free agency so I'm inclined to believe him

We needed a top 4 RDH, a #3 C, and a top 6 RW. So far we signed a bottom pairing LHD to a massive contract and traded away a top 6 RW. I wasn't expecting to fill all of these needs but to not even fill one is unacceptable. This offseason was our best chance to get that RHD due to the expansion draft and we squandered it.

We're a worse team right now and I highly doubt we'll have the same luck with injuries as we did last year. Right now we're hoping that Connor, Klefbom, and Talbot all stay healthy, Talbot has another vezina-worthy season, Maroon scores 27 again, Strome or Pulju replaces Eberle's scoring, and Russell doesn't suck with Sekera gone. How likely are all these things to happen? We've got the best player in the league on his ELC for one more year and we aren't even going to go for the cup?

We don't have that much cap space, you actually should look at sites like Cap Friendly and factor in Draisaitl's potentially salary AND the bonuses we are going to have to pay to McDavid.

We have enough to add maybe 1 $4-$5 million dollar player and I would assume Chiarelli would also want to have some room under the cap for the trade deadline.

Eberle's cap savings are basically a wash because we spent it on Russell.

There's no babysitting, RNH is talented enough to play off of McDavid or Drai. He looked great on Drai's line in short stints last year, miles better than he looked on the Eberle, Lucic line.

I don't get the "suck it up Ryan", you have to learn to be a defensive, shutdown center or else. That's silly. How about utilizing his strengths instead of wasting another year of his development in an unsuitable role? Do what's best for him and the team.

The trade deadline might not matter with depth that shallow. Chia's negotiation skills leave a lot to be desired.

Perhaps, we'll see. I think it's a longshot but I suppose we can see a depth add at forward but it's going to have to be real cheap.
