Gauthier in a bit of a funk. Let's see if he can step it up. This is a good test for him, to see if he can motivate a team on his own during a pressure filled game.

I read so many descriptions of Gauthiers game, that it made me check back on Doug Jarvis' career. He was a face off and PK specialist that was drafted by the Leafs 24th overall in that 1975 draft. He was traded immediately after the draft for "superstar" Greg Hubick. :shakehead

He had a great 3rd Junior year, Gauthier was injured this season and different eras, but if Gauthier became what Jarvis was for the Habs it's a huge win. Jarvis played with some amazing players though. He was later traded to the Caps and along with Langway, made them a great defensive team and Stanley Cup contender.

I was watching the Jays game and then they switched over to Rimouski, which i'll watch now.

What was the first thing i saw? Gauthier not cheating on a play.
It's junior, maybe he could have got away with it. Maybe it turns into a goal. Maybe he should have because you have to win the cup. All valid. But there are few players in the NHL who could have made that cheat successfully (at the NHL level). And even then it's risky. If he fails it's an odd man rush against. So count me happy that he is making the smart decision on the ice.

Nice to see him on for the final face-off as well.

Loved the strong play at the defensive blue line, setting up an odd man rush.

Great recovery from a turnover.

Gauthier really stays high in the offensive zone. He allows the wingers to go and dig to retrieve the puck, which allows him to be set-up nicely in the transition game if he needs to get back.

Not a lot of stops and starts for him. Wide turns. Might have to watch that at the next level.

Wide turns is a problem you see in every prospect, a lot of NHL players too. It's just one of those things you never really notice you are doing in the moment. Young players want to stay on the ice for longer shifts and stopping and going burns you out quicker. Hard habit to beat.

Another clutch defensive play, breaking up a pass to the net, and getting the clearance

Honestly feels like Gauthier would be a better player with better line-mates
Yeah, that can be said of any one, but... the talent on ice with him is... not NHL. hahaha.

(Edit: although he ... was .. i mean he made a great stick play and although a bit soft on the goal itself he was having to chase back to cover for his linemates. i mean, taking the play as a whole it has got to be mentioned what a complete mess the team as a whole was on that goal. At some point, what can you do?)

Why are you guys praising him? Defensive skill isn't something to be excited about!

I mean, just look at the Oilers dynasty coming in first place, four times in the last six years with their stud young offensive guns! They have virtually no defense on their team!

This is what I have been saying. I think he's a player whose offensive numbers will increase once he starts playing in a better league with better players.

Have to say, Freddie the Goat looks really good this game. Had some really good offensive chances, backed with solid defensive play. Not ready to write off his offensive side yet, looks like he could actually improve quite a bit.

There's definitely room for improvement, and he's been pretty steadily improving.

Let's just hope it keeps up.

Hey just wait until the Oilers draft Matthews 1st overall next year. It will be just like the 2nd coming of Gretzky/Messier.

Only watched 1 period and initial thought of Fredrick Gauthier is that he is pretty slow out there.

Only watched 1 period and initial thought of Fredrick Gauthier is that he is pretty slow out there.

Well in his draft combine he rated top 3 for speed. He's been working with Barb Underhill ever since. His skating is now very good.

Here's what his coach said last week week:
"I should mention that he's one of the most important players in the Q and he plays in Rimouski, and we're thankful for this," said Rimouski head coach Serge Beausoleil, of Leafs prospect Frederik Gauthier in an interview following Tuesday's Game 3 victory against the Gatineau Olympiques.
