Notice the time stamp. This was legitimately leaked about 30 mins before the tv air time. As a Sabres fan I didn’t want to believe it at the time, but it was 100% accurate.

Someone screwed up big time...

Btw, sorry if this was already posted.

This obviously means:
1) The drawing was obviously held BEFORE the broadcast
2) SportsNet was told of the results before the live announcement
3) SportsNet set up graphics before the live announcement and had them queue'd up

My takeaways from this debacle is:
1) Why don't they show the actual drawing to the audience? That would be way more interesting
2) Why did the NHL tell the network ahead of time, how stupid is that
3) How banana republic is SportsNet that they can't punch up the logo as it's happening?

I think it happened on Finnish TV. The guy who posted it goes into a bit more detail -

Turns out the Sens taking Brady Tkachuk at 4 last year was a pretty good decision.

Granted whomever the Avs take at 4 can possibly turn out better than Brady, but the Sens got their man and got him into the system a year earlier, and didn't accidentally give up the better draft position.

An international network may have broadcast an off-air moment, but that still doesn't excuse the NHL for telling SportsNet ahead of time and for SportsNet to have the three logos q'd up like a bunch of amateur high school AV students.

Also what it means is everyone in that room (ie the team general managers) would have caught a glimpse of that board and know the results before the guy flipped the placards over

Chicago and Colorado fans, who are you hoping for?

I wanna try and get an idea of who might be left at 5.

I still don't understand why the league makes all top 3 picks a lottery, if the Avs legitimately sucked they could have lost the top overall pick in two of three drafts. And if the lottery was the old way, they could have potentially added Hischier over Makar and Hughes over Byram. So why not just give the worst team the best odds, it's not like it infinitely improves their odds. Or why not move the lottery to tiers (1-5, 6-10, etc)? If anything, there should just be a forced exclusion for multiple 1sts in a block of years, not lottery balls the whole time.

Hey Everyone,

Still taking draftees for the 1st annual bandwagon draft, come on by and sign up, will be fun and should have a lot of laughs, and some crying, but more laughs I guarantee you, our teams are out so might as well have something to root for, other than conditional picks or course, lol

The 1st Annual Not-Canes Bandwagon Draft Extravaganza (Now seeking GM's and draftees)

Also seeking GMs for Pittsburgh, San Jose, and Winnipeg.

A lot of hate for the new lottery system. I really like it. I think putting the top 3 picks into the lottery is a great idea - obviously it really discourages tanking but the main reason for me is often the difference between 4th worst team and the 12th worst is 5 points or so. Given that most of the teams in that range have known for quite some time they won't be playing in the playoffs, the difference in points between teams out of the playoffs is fairly insignificant. So I find the new system great in that it allows for a lot more movement in the final order, which I think is actually more equitable.

For instance, there wasn't much difference between the Rangers and Devils this season - they both were non-playoff teams pretty much the entire year. Yet there was about 5 spots between them in the draft order. I think the lottery percentages more accurately reflect the difference between the Devils and the Rangers, and I think all 3 teams are deserving winners of this year's lottery.

Congrats to the Devils Rangers and Hawks! Sorry to the lottery losers - in time things should balance out.

I wonder if at some point the NHL will expand the lottery to the top 5 or maybe even the top 10 picks?

What other way would you have to stop tanking?

The system seems to work well enough, it should probably even be worse odds for the top 3 like the NBA. It's not perfect but if you have any better ideas then please go ahead and share with us

At this point the league should just throw everybody's name in a hat and pick randomly for all draft positions 1 thru 217.

What a terrible outcome for NYI.

Oh please.

You got Barzal going all-BEAST-MODE right now and for the foreseeable future.

Don't you start Woe-is-me'ing now. :P:P:P:P

He's got talent for sure. I liked Kakko better, but he probably fit in with the Avs better than he would in New Jersey. Hughes size worries me, but if he can be dynamic enough to not get crushed every game, he should be a good 1c in a few years.

Isn't Johnny Hockey as tall as Hughes, though?

And Jack did say that his goal right now is to put on some size 'cause he sees how big and strong the league is with all the players.

Neither one of them was a clear top talent. It was a weak draft at the top.

I mean the Avs went from 1st to 4th after a 48 point season, and it was a blessing in disguise.

Hughes and Kakko are not a Clear Top Talent?

Bet you wouldn't be saying this if you won the #1 pick or got to pick #2.:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Tanking isn't a concern big enough to alter the entire draft system. But if you think teams tank per year for top picks, limit the #1 balls they can have and end it.

My proposal has been the same since before this ideation of the lottery. It fits the spirit of entertainment in the lottery process as well as shifting picks so how well you play doesn't lock you in nor how bad you are doesn't prevent you from a better chance at better talent.

1-5 lottery, 6-10 lottery, keep going up to 32 when Seattle joins. No one can fall more than 1 spot in the draft, but a lot more teams will move around.

Grrr. NJD with another 1st OA and multiple cups in recent memory along with the CBH also with multiple cups in even more recent memory is upsetting to say the least.

One of these days my team will crawl out of the basement and luck into a pick that isn’t Nolan Patrick.
