Currently he’s “only” 42nd on the all time list, but given his iron-man nature and high level of play, Burns has a real chance of finishing in the Chelios/Recchi range of GP.
Fair bet he finishes this season at 1414, for 38th.
Another 80 game season puts him at 1494, passing Gretzky for 24th.
Another 80 game season get him to 1576, at 14th in between Lidstrom and Bourque.
One more 80 game season and he ends up at 1656, just ahead of Recchi for 8th all time.
At that point, it’s up to him. 1779 is the record. He would be 42 and
probably still capable of putting in another two seasons as a depth player if he really wanted it. He would hit the record at around the same age that Selanne/Recchi/Chara retired, assuming he gets regular games.
Yes that’s all a lot of GP at his age, but why not? Is he so different from a Chara in terms of his durability and athleticism? Chara got regular shifts till he retired at 44, which is still 5 years in the future for Burns.
Burns seems like the kind of guy who would actually enjoy playing out his career this way, even if it meant bouncing around the league for the fun of it, like a Jagr.
