Spezza got neutered by Babcock in the first game of the season. Spezza turned into a solid addition. And the only one with a real set of gonads on the whole effing team, cept for Jake and Kyle. In the immortal words of the GM from Slapshot......"bunch a........p***yes!!!!"
Until the leafs win the cup, we shouldn't be signing vets who have not won the cup. I didnt know at the time but Tavares hasn't won a playoff round ever. We need to stop surrounding the core with losers and bring a winning culture, this was the message before we drafted Matthews. Why would vets chasing the cup sign with the LEAFS for league minimum? Because other contending teams dont want them..

The more I think about Thornton, the more it feels like a sideshow for semi educated casual fans as a former big name to recognize. Can’t see him doing any more for the Leafs in a game seven than a Marleau did last year.

For $1M and 12:00 a night you wouldn't expect that though as he would replace Kerfoot not Matthews. You only consider it to save $2.5M on your #3c so you can get the RD you need and maybe get to that game seven. I don't know how much he has left and at some point its going to be nothing much. He played on a tire fire club last year where everyone sucked which did not help his results but he is old as dirt too. I'm happy with any $1M guy in that spot though because they can't double shift JT and Matty to cover holes in the defence and they can't fill the holes with no cap space. Lets just find a younger guy then:)

you cannot complain about toughness, grit, etc as a fan base and then want the Leafs to dress Spezza and Thornton in the bottom 6 of your lineup.

This does not compute.

It's not necessarily an either-or situation though.

The Engvall-Spezza-Clifford line looked good with Spezza being the added bit of skill beside two more physical players

Yes he has. Stop making things up to go with a dumb narrative.

Andersen has made the WCF losing to the Hawks
Muzzin has won 2 cups

Just checked, ok oops Tavares won 1 round of the playoffs his whole career. What's Muzzin and Anderson have to do with us signing Vets next year who havent won anything?

Go check the Kings, Hawks, Blues roster when they won their first cups. Not a lot of multiple cup winners on those first championship rosters.

Are you suggesting we should surround the team with losers?

Load managing him and a resigned Spezza would give this team fantastic centre depth.

If he's willing to sign for close to league minimum no reason for the team not to ink the deal
According to the article, they said a $1 - 2 million deal. At best, I can't see us keeping Spezza if we sign Thornton. And, $2 m would require even more fanangling.

Iginla never won a cup, and I'd say he's the ideal player for a lot of folks around here.

I don't think necessarily participating on a cup winning team has to be a key fa toe in proving if a vet is a good influence or not. Only a few guys ever get to win one, does t mean e erhone else is worthless

Are we playing Jumbo to play with JT so we don’t think JT is slow? Lol

It is a good depth move considering he is at league Minimum.
Do we know if he will sign at league minimum? For what its worth (perhaps not a lot), the article says $1 - 2 million.

I think 1 mil would be fine. But the Leafs likely wouldn't find it worth the effort to move out additional cap room if it was much more than that

If he wants to do the Spezza thing and come for the minimum, I'm down. Can't invest anything(cap space) in that, though.

If Clifford will take a hometown discount and Spezza does the same again, I'm happy with that as a 4th line. Quite often our second best line throughout the series and all guys that can play up in the lineup in the event of injuries

Spezza took league minimum and will likely do the same again to stay. He wore his heart on his sleeve in the playoffs. Never whined with what Babs did to him early in the year. Put time in with guys like Robertson after practice. And he can still outskate Thornton. I value loyalty. If you want both, sure. If you out can only have one, you take Spezza. He came first. Thornton has had other chances to come here via Free Agency and hasn't. It's Spezza over Thornton for me.

I have not been following Sharks but can he still be effective as a 3rd line PP specialist?

I wasn't implying Thornton over Spezza just to make that clear. I was merely pointing out that it would seem unlikely that we can keep both given our cap crunch and that they play similar roles.

No I understand that lol wasn't directed toward you at all. Just saying for those reasons, I hope it's not Thornton over Spezza
