Most people who say Chiarelli traded Barzal for Reinhart don't think Chiarelli literally drafted Barzal and then traded him. They mean he should have had Barzal ranked and kept the pick. It's not hard.
yes, but when people say that he traded Barzal, they are looking at what Barzal is now and not what he was then. Look at all the GMs who passed on him in that draft. Barzal obviously put in work and made himself better today than he was back then, and by a larger margin than any GMs thought, GMs who have a good rep such as the Boston GM. A similar thing has gone on with the Hall trade, with outrageous hyperbole like saying it is the worst trade of all time (lol), which is a shell game that involves pretending that today's Hall with the Hart is the same one that was traded, and also diminishing what Larsson is.
And btw, I'm not saying that these were moves that Chia did good ones, just that the hate on these moves is vastly overstated. On places like forums, or just in general, people like finding targets to bash because it is fun, and then it becomes hyper charged. I get that people like drumming up the drama of it, but guess what? Chiarelli isn't the cartoon character people here portray him as. Just like with those individual moves, his total record is also contorted to make it seem a lot worse than it really is, with his bad moves overly emphasized and exaggerated, and his good moves diminished more than they should be or not mentioned at all.
