.... whats with all the Toronto arenas & stadiums from a Buffalonian there Howie? I'm assuming your family mustve made trips, CNE, perhaps events, games?.... The Mutual Street Arena quite the little gem (though obviously undersized for NHL hockey), Foster Hewitt doing his first broadcast of a game from there... and ya, Hanlans the fore-runner to Maple Leaf Stadium, some seriously valuable real estate and a treat both being located right next to the water so you had that cooling effect, beat the city heat, though at times nasty with weather inversions, storms, wind. Actually built on reclaimed land as is much of Toronto's waterfront.

Huge deal when Maple Leaf Stadium came down in 67 (opened in 1926) and not a lot of memorabilia surviving from it. Seats, ticket stubs etc. Future LA Kings owner Jack Kent Cooke owned the Maple Leafs & ran the stadium during the 50's, Cooke a "media mogul" owning various radio stations & so on, moving to Los Angeles in 1960, selling the club in 64. He'd tried to convince City Council to build him a new stadium in the hopes of attracting a MLB team but they werent buying.... Jays of course eventually arriving in 77 playing out of the horrid Exhibition Stadium until the SkyDome opened in 89.

November 15, 1950 – Dr. David F. Tracy (second from left) a psychologist who had a practice in Manhattan and who used to help the St. Louis Browns and the New York Rangers with their mental preparation gives the men a mental boost. From left to right: Pentti Lund – David Tracy - Tony Leswick – Alex “Killer” Kaleta and Buddy O’Connor

Pentti Lund, the first Finnish player to have a career in the NHL. Albert Pudas had a cup of coffee with St. Pats before Lund, who won the Calder in 1949 as a Finnish citizen before taking on Canadian citizenship a little later to make border crossings less of a hassle. Interestingly Ray Timgren, whose parents were Finnish, was also on the running for Calder in 1949. Lunds NHL career ended prematurely because of an eye injury. Later on he became a sports reporter who clearly cared about facts:

200220366-800x_.jpg

(The text in Finnish says: Pentti Lund's unusual meal in late October 1972 was notified on many Canadian newspapers.

Here's Lund (second from the left) with Ed Slowinski (left) and goalie Charlie Rayner around 1950. The guy without hockey gear on is a Finnish goaltending, junior coaching and bakery (!) legend Juhani Linkosuo, who had come to New York to learn from the pros:

The puck with which Lund scored his first NHL goal on November the 6th 1948, the first goal scored by a Finn in the NHL:

Here's Lund wearing his old sweater in 2000 (in Thunder Bay, I believe):

Awesome. Pentti Lund. Did a Hell of a job shutting down Rocket Richard in the 1950 Playoffs, holding Maurice to just one goal in 5 games while racking up 11 points in 12 games himself, albeit ultimately in a losing effort to Detroit in the Finals but still. Incredible performance. Had a brother as well who played pro, minors, but at a time when minor-pro at most levels an excellent brand of hockey. The Lund family arrived in Canada when Pentti was just 6, quite the vibrant Finnish community up in the Thunder Bay area where they settled.

Fairly certain that pic is at Port Arthur Arena in Thunder Bay.
Found an online photo to confirm:
Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) Program

From NWO Sports Hall of Fame Facebook site:
"Pentti Lund began his newspaper career with the Fort William Times-Journal in the 1960s"

and from CBC article in April 2011.
"Pentti Lund, right, is seen inspecting a hockey stick with Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a campaign stop at the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in Thunder Bay, Ont."

This an odd one as that's Don Awrey wearing #27 behind Henri Richard there when he wore #26 throughout his career with the Bruins.

Fantastic photo of Keinonen, I don't think I've seen that one. Keinonen is mostly known for his exploits with the national team and Rauman Lukko, but on that photo he's on RU-38 sweater. Full name of RU-38 is Rosenlewin Urheilijat -38 (Sportsmen of Rosenlew), company sports club of Rosenlew which was a big company operating on many business sectors from paper mills to home appliances and farm machinery and a sports club was founded to improve tense relations between workforce and owners.

Keinonen as a player was known to be a expert stickhandler and 'dribbler', making football (or soccer if you wish) like dekes with his body and had an uncanny ability to get out from corner scrums with the puck.

His most famous moment with the national team was with the first WC tournament played in Finland in 1965 , for which the first indoor rink in Finland, Hakametsä in Tampere, was built. Finland wasn't very good on international level then and 2-2 draw with Sweden was celebrated wildly after Keinonen scored both goals for Finland.

Here's a couple of shots from Hakametsä in 1965:

The scoreboard, N-liitto is short for Neuvostoliitto, The soviet union. Kanada you can perhaps guess.

Not stritly hockey photo, but a nice stamp to commemorate the World Championships

lalli.jpg

Here's the sweater of Team Finland in 1965.

29126-1.jpg

And lastly, here's Keinonen on a Finnish hockey card, wearing the colours of Rauman Lukko, the club he is best remembered for.

He finished his playing career in 1978 and afterwards coached all three major clubs from southwestern Finland, Lukko, TPS and Ässät, all heated rivals with each others.

Ya, thats a custom Harrison, same model & maker I had only mine was plain bondo grey & had the back of the head protection piece, a little bit higher on the crown of the head, identical to the one Meloche wore with the Seals.

Very interesting, had no idea as to the depth of that player (and Coach) and his history, history of the club, arena etc (which is a really nice looking building). Love the RU-38 jersey he's wearing even though it looks like its been through WW2. :D
