Why are there four goaltenders in this picture?

That's a good question FR. I'm not sure why they would have four goalies in the picture as it's usually three at most. I believe the goalies on the left of the picture are Wayne Stephenson (# 35) and Dave Parro (# 30) and the goalies on the right are Mike Palmateer (# 29) and Gary Inness (# 31).

^^^ Wow, nice photos there James!... The lighting in that shot from the early 50's featuring Yale, highly unusual. Really nice glow to it..... Never seen the 1920 US Team shot. Very interesting, nicely composed.... pretty basic "sweaters" too. Very Ralph Lauren. Great shots of the Rosebuds (football or flight helmet on that one player?) & St.Paul HC, very cool, relaxed. :D

The photographer gets first star of the game. It takes a whole lot of guts to lean over the boards with a camera when you've got Howe and Fontinato bearing down on you with sticks raised.

Only international photos this time....

f65c58cb3f4070473ba8f98dcfdbbcfa.jpg

First time Ive ever seen this shot... pretty much disgusts yes?.... seeing the Nazi salute staining the game given all that transpired thereafter... never dawned until I saw this photo that ya, I guess the German Hockey Team & all of the athletes competing for Germany & probably Austria as well had to do that... some willingly, others not though failing to do so would most definitely have resulted in some very serious consequences... for them, possibly even so too for their family members.

This game would have been played on February the 11th, the only time Hungary played Germany as they were both Finalists from their respective Pools... Hungary losing 2-1. Great Britain (controversially) won the Gold Medal, Canada Silver (Port Arthur Bearcats with help from a trio from the Montreal Royals, Hugh Farquharson of the Royals & who also played for McGill University leading scorer of the Games with 11, Assists were not recorded), the US winning Bronze with the Czech's finishing 4th, Germany 5th, Sweden 6th & so on.

Seems odd, out of time, no Russian Team... would be over 10yrs and either 20-26.5 million or possibly as many as 40 million (depending on what numbers you want to believe, I'm thinking closer to 40M) Russian servicemen & civilians dead at the hands of the Nazi war machine before they'd begin to develop their hockey program, something that played a rather large role in healing the wounds, restoring the loss, re-instilling their pride of place and accomplishment.

Yes, the German and Austrian players definitely had to do the salute.
Hitler demanded the IOC that all the athletes would have to salute him in the customary Nazi fashion.

There’s a great story on how the American hockey team refused to do that during the opening ceremony. They didn’t acknowledge Hitler at all, so the Führer got really pissed at them.

Later that day after the opening ceremony, Hitler and his entourage came down to visit the American locker room just before their game against Germany. It is said that Hitler and some of his sidekicks shouted at the American coach Albert Prettyman.

Hitler berated the Americans for the non-salute and then went on to say that “we will beat your American team on the ice.” Frank Baker who was the American backup goalie was the only one who spoke German on the team. When he heard Hitler say that, Baker calmly leaned over and said (of course in German), "We will not only beat Germany in hockey tomorrow”, he told Hitler, “Die Vereinigten Staaten werden Deutschland immer besiegen” (The United States will always defeat Germany.) Hitler, stunned that any of the Americans spoke German, conducted an orderly retreat out of the locker room.

Awesome. Never heard this story before. Gotta like that. God Bless Frank Baker, Team USA. Love it when people carry on a conversation in their native language in front of others arrogantly assuming those around them wont understand... then get called on it. Had no idea though that Hitler & his little band of psychopathic sycophants inserted themselves into the games & festivities to that extent, to be actually visiting the locker rooms or whatever of Germany's challengers on the ice... and I would assume track, field, pool etc. Absolute Hoods. Type of thing youd hear about with Gangsters during the late 19th through mid-20th century & Boxing only in so many respects what Hitler & his Henchman up to at the Games far more insidious... Demagoguery, demanding respect, that they receive their stiff arm salutes from everyone & anyone.... Certainly fooled Chamberlain, much of the world... so ya, way to go Frank. Gold Medal for that alone.

Awesome bunch of shots up there RGO! Nice to see Gary Innes in action... Gadsby & his patented Hip Check etc..... This one I found interesting & looked it up.... 4 of the players have the same surname of Clyke; 2 Jordans, 1 players last name is Paris as is the Team Manager. Obviously brothers & or cousins, likely having grown up together & of course playing together into adulthood which is interesting & informative in and of itself.

I found the composition of the photo intriguing, composition & equipment, thinking it appeared earlier than 1930. Those are flat out Cricket Pads the Goalies got on, they appear to be wearing turtlenecks or some combination of sweater/crew neck... the sticks could be earlier... just looks to me like maybe 1900's however.... fair diversity in old & new equipment back in the 20's & 30's, they likely played outdoors hence the crew necks, the photographer probably older & decidedly old-school with the late Victorian early Edwardian posing & setup I suppose.
