I think there's data that shows male athletes decline in performance temporarily after the birth of a child. I think it's been found to be more than just sleep schedule problems. The estrogen/testosterone ratio spikes in the father. It serves to make them better care-givers temporarily.

How'd this guy go from 'coach's porn' to 16 mins a night and a whopping 11 mins last night.

The f*** does Maurice see in Beaulieu the to be playing him more.

I would say right now they are playing as near equivalents. Maurice is not wrong in limiting his minutes.

I would hope Demelo gets back to playing the way he was upon his arrival in Jetsville...it will make our backend much stronger. Whereas Beaulieu is likely not going to resurrect his career.

I’m fine with being in the minority...there really isn’t a marked difference between the play of the two. I want neither of them on the ice late in the game. Apparently our coaches felt the same last night too.

Like I said, I think Demelo can get back to better play, Beaulieu not so much.

Played one of his best games as a Jet last night. The guy is Stastny-esque in the subtleness of how he goes about playing mostly mistake free hockey.

Will be Intersting to see how they navigate the expansion draft. We probably protect Morrissey although he has by far the worst contract of the D group. He's been below average to a disaster for going on two seasons+ now. Pionk obviously gets protected as he's been playing at an extremely high level.

DeMelo is superior to Stanley currently. But if Stanley can continue to improve and post strong top 4d results higher in the lineup+with his size, that'd be an asset almost no one has.

I don't think DeMelo does anything spectacular, he's just flat out solid. Won't end up on highlight reels for or against. He's been good imo. So it's good now vs what Stanley can ultimately develop into in a year or two. This org has also invested alot into Stanley as well.

Not a marked difference... except in actual performance...

5v5 goal differential per hour:
DeMelo +0.93 (2nd best on Jets out of 8)
Beaulieu -1.22 (2nd worst)

Shots on net differential:
DeMelo +2.78 (1st)
Beaulieu -1.22 (7th)

Corsi:
DeMelo -0.86 (3rd)
Beaulieu -10.36 (6th)

Expected goals:
DeMelo +0.31 (1st)
Beaulieu -0.76 (6th)

Of the players to skate regularly with both Beaulieu and DeMelo (Morrissey and Stanley) all have done better with DeMelo.

Do we really need advanced stats, to ascertain, that 88 isn't very good?

As a NHL exec once said when I talked to him:
Advance stats aren't to tell you who is the worst or best. That's obvious.
They will help you say by what degree someon is better, giving you quantity to what you knew, and also help with the middle area that's a lot less obvious.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Considering the year to year variability in adjusted metrics, it's often hard to get a really clear picture about how much better one player's performance is than another's. I think what it might do better is to give more objective evidence about the performance of players that are under-appreciated due to style or counting stats (e.g. DeMelo). Conversely, it can give you some pause about players you might overvalued based on style or production (e.g. Connor).

morrissey's best, and arguably only great, string of games still came with demelo.

demelo plays good whoever his partner is (stanley, beau, jomo etc)

hmmm

(obviously contextual factors come into play too though)

when some1 says there isn't a difference between the two, perhaps yes.

I laughed out loud when Maurice called DeMelo's game 'coaches porn'. If he was that great, he wouldn't have been so cheap - a third round pick. I am not crapping on DeMelo. He is a decent 2nd pairing D man and we got him pretty cheap. But he was never going to be more than that, alth0ugh possibly less. I think it was a good acquisition by Chevy. The problem is that all of our D men are being asked to play over their heads. That's what's going to bite us in the playoffs this year.

DeMelo is quietly having an amazing season this year...

His ranking in the entire NHL this season for defenders:
5th in Evolving Hockey's GAR model
47th in Evolving Hockey's xGAR model
27th in Garret's model that blends different EV components of that model
72nd in Top Down Hockey's WAR model

Also, looking at all Jets' defenders to play since the 2011 start, the 3rd best RAPM adjusted xG +/- per hour performance.

At the start of the season I said the Jets' problems were that DeMelo, Pionk, and Morrissey were all 2nd pairing dmen and the rest of the Jets were 3rd pairs or worse.

However, so far for this season, I would put it more like this:
Pionk - performing like a fringe #1, or elite #2
DeMelo - performing like a fringe #2, or elite #3
Morrissey - performing like a 3rd pair defender

If Marchessault and Smith were so good why did Tallon basically give them away for free?
