I remember Turtledove's alternate histories being popular back in the 9os, but never got around to checking 'em out.
This is one set in the 1880s, and the Confederate States have won their independence.. and Lincoln is still living. Interesting so far..

Mostly a photo book.. contrasting images of 1800s Richmond Va, with now (early 2ooos). I spent a lot of time in Richmond as a kid, so.. some nostalgia.

History & collection of religious/Christian icon (paintings).. that are largely stored in the British museum now.

Incidentally, this thread has really thinned out.

For me, it's just slow going. I haven't really started to read new books since I haven't gotten to finish ones I've already mentioned in this forum. But this might change soon in the sense that I might be getting into new ones. Also, I am still working on at least one of those I've already mentioned (Introduction to Linear Algebra, by Gilbert Strang).

A man living close to a Virginia battlefield develops a fascination with the life of Jackson. He delves in to researching Jackson's life, and Jackson's place in contemporary America. Really good so far, I'm curious about his take on Jackson in modern America (haven't got to it yet).

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite novels.

War between heaven and hell with people caught in between. A lot of religious satire and haunting/gripping/riveting scenes. I don’t think I would completely classify it as “horror”. Similar tone and story style as the Berserk manga series.

Important book for people interested in understanding (and fixing) the corruption and inefficiencies within Christian altruism. Author ran an urban ministry, and concisely gets to the point of how to improve charity..
For example, he talks about how much $ is spent sending American kids to paint/repair churches in Central America etc.. but for a fraction of the cost, the American charities could just employ local Central American tradesmen.. who are more knowledgeable & need the work. There is a lot of $ being mismanaged for the sake of (patronizing) weekend altruism, etc.

My friend Ken retired from the FBI and has become an author. This is the first of three books he's written with the character and it's a fantastic noir-type read. Recommend!

Only about halfway through at this point but it's very good. Delves into the dynamics/personalities of the SCLC leadership, why Birmingham was such a risky - and by that token, only - choice to stage these protests, and the Kennedy's on-and-off commitment to Civil Rights, among other things.
