They looked good to start the game, with an aggressive forecheck and intercepting passes, but once they gave up a PP goal with 0.1 seconds left in the first on the game's first penalty, their mental game suffered. They'd already been taking cheap shots at the Gulls behind the play, and once the officials started blowing whistles, that sealed the Barracuda's fate -- the Gulls went 4-for-5 on the PP for the night, while the Barracuda came up 0-for-6 and sometimes giving up better shorthanded chances than they were managing PP opportunities at the other end. Gahagen did not have a good night, letting at least one goal trickle through after a partial stop, and barely managing an .800 spct.
They certainly did persist in trying to make it a fight night - Boll's fight came after persistent provocation from Clark, starting with the faceoff after the third goal and persisting after the whistle until he launched the attack through the linesman in front of his own bench -- the outcome was not what he was looking for. Bollig had already lost his cool, flipping off the 12k+ crowd from the bench after he was observed punching a Gull in the face behind the play (but avoiding the view of the refs), and struggled mightily to shed a linesman later in the period to get into another scrum to attack Tropp, earning him the misconduct on top of the major. Once the goals kept coming, the frustration and chippiness kept increasing, leading to the downward spiral for the Barracuda.
It'll be interesting to see whether they can manage to present a better mental game tonight.
