EK is still the best defenseman in hockey, don't let people fool you into thinking he's having a bad year.

The best forward playing defense yes. The Best defensemen in the NHL is Doughty.
EK proved a lot to me last year in the playoffs, he's not as soft as I thought he was but 10/10 I take doughty. what he gives up to EK in offense he destroys him on defense. Drew Doughty is the best defesmen in the nhl

We have a gaping whole in the lineup, yeah I love Rielly but our blueline is still thin given Tanev, Karlsson, OEL and McDonagh are to some degree out there this deadline and up coming draft should it be imperative to land one?

Is this the kind of window you look back on and question why didn't you pull the trigger.

Even take a run at John Carlson as a UFA or a Trouba deal in July

To that end I'm ok with flipping JVR and/or Bozak for picks as ammo for a July deal.

-edit- Liljegren is off the table IMO, I'm a fanboy for Ryan Merkley so this thread is me questioning my blind faith in the draft, by all means bash my opinion looking for diverse hot takes and such.

Are Marner and Nylander on the table? Because we aren't getting an age appropriate #1 defenseman for late picks and B prospects.

EK has had his struggles this year, but the stuff about his D should be buried by now. He was better in the playoffs last year than Doughty has ever been. EK was by far the best player last Spring.

Leaf fans really are clueless at evaluating defenseman. Read this and learn that Rielly is a bonafide #1D.

Morgan Rielly’s Evolution into a #1 Defenceman

“Rielly’s team has significantly outshot the opposition when he’s on the ice.
To give you an idea of just how difficult that is, here’s a list of defencemen who face elite competition (90th percentile or higher), have a positive shot differential relative to their teammates, and are on pace for over 50 points this season:
  • Drew Doughty
  • Victor Hedman
  • Morgan Rielly
That’s it.”

Yeah but he's aLeaf D so he'll never get credit.
He is without a doubt a #1 D.

You can pitch whatever you like
Are the Leafs stupid not to get a 1D? It depends on the level of stupidity you are looking for.

What if the Leafs traded Jeff Ware for Lidstrom? Anyone can play that game

It’s clearly what they need more than anything and has been the case since last summer. Giving away young prospects or something crazy like Kapanen is not worth it. I’d rather see a Bozak for a pending UFA D-man + pick + 2nd tier prospect type scenario to make a push and then you aren’t mortgaging the future and the long term plan.

This year Doughty has been the best defenseman overall, but trust me when I say Karlsson is not having a bad season at all.

If you look at their respective careers though, Karlsson wins (ainec).

Isn't it kinda meaningless to class players into # 1 , # 2 etc From the Leafs POV, all Reilly can do is be the best he can be. Doesn't matter if it he doesn't meet the non sensical rating system imposed by others.
For the Leafs, to be successful (and it won't be this year), I'll play the rating games, having three # 2s, 2 # 3s, a # 4 and # 5 might quite be good enough for any team.

Our big needs are a top Dman like Doughty and a power winger like Benn to knock Hyman down to the fourth. And yes I know those two are a pipe dream.
Unfortunately I think we're not shopping in the right store, and we'll end up giving away picks and prospects for a couple of gudpros to make Babcock smile for the first time.

if benn isn't as much a gudpro tm as hyman though, benn will be playing on fourth line with kapanen. or he will knock marleau to 3rd line.

please name the 30 d who are better than rielly. because if he's not a 1d, then there are 30 better. although gardiner has technically more points and a better +/-

I think the Leafs will pass Boston in the standings even though the perception is the Leafs are not in their league.
Boston has had a VERY cushy schedule compared to the Leafs and have a very difficult March and April.

I would love OEL. Offer liljegren a first .... how many times has this been posted.

But seriously if we can get oel we’re looking good.

Chayka would prob want liljegren 1st 2nd kapanen/leivo to start and rightly so.

ermmm...no. lili may potentially be in the tier of oel, but not a karlsson nor doughty. kapanen is a top 6. i'd rather give away our first and some other prospects.

this brian burke mentality is why a rebuild wouldn't successfully happen. if you saw what happened here and in calgary, they weren't ready. fortunately, our current gm seems to be much smarter.

Well I wouldn’t want to give them up either I was just throwing out some ideas, I’m glad the management doesn’t read my posts lol. After we get this number 1 D then fans will be screaming for another C prospect, then tenacity etc etc. Hopefully this playoff run will make the kids grow.

I would love to hear a updated scouting report on him as I hope we see him in the lineup a bit quicker than dermott was

When or IF Tampa bay goes all in on Erik Karlsson when they already have Hedman, the question to this thread will become glaringly obvious as Leaf Cup hopes will run through TB each year and Leafs Leafs could come close to a Hedman-Karlsson-Stralman-Sergatchev top 4 D.

TB has Hedman one the top 5 Dmen in the NHL right now and Noris calibre Dman and appear to be the front runners in EK interest right now.

Do the Leafs need an serious upgrade should that happen, talk about a rhetorical question?

The biggest gain will be from getting someone who can push one of Zaitsev/Hainsey to the bottom pairing and get Polak/Carrick out of the lineup.

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-X
Dermott-Zaitsev

3 solid pairings, don't feel nervous with any of them on the ice. That X can be a guy like Braun, Pysyk, or Petry. Why pay more than twice the price for McD/Tanev?
Put Tanev beside Rielly and let Hainsey babysit Gardiner.

You stick to your plan.

You can get away with assembling your team for 1 opponent in the NFL, but I don't think that strategy works in hockey.

The reason TB can go top heavy is because they have so many young guys that keep coming up (when they are ready) and producing on the cheap. This took years of amassing of talent and proper development. We are nowhere near that type of depth.
