please name the 30 d who are better than rielly. because if he's not a 1d, then there are 30 better. although gardiner has technically more points and a better +/-

Why do people whine about Rielly? He's played as a one 1D this year? Are you so triggered by the title? I would like to see the Leafs have two elite pairs. Personally I believe a Rielly-Gardiner pair would wreak the league if you could play Hainesy with an elite talent on another pair.

This is why you can't discuss hockey on this site you have posters devote all their energy to picking inane conflict.

We all understand Rielly is having a great year and is on a great contract, a contract so good we can discuss bringing in more talent on a bluleline that overall has issues.... f***

and i'd love it if the Leafs had an elite player in every position, but that's not realistic in a cap world. if we can add a good defenseman for the right price, of course we'd do it. so would every other team. If not, then oh well

Who is making elite money on the Leafs? Babcock?

the NHL will likely continue beyond this year, and we have to manage our cap accordingly
And the cap grows and besides Auston's getting a massive deal who is the other giant contract? Tampa is looking to add and their roster is older and further along with big deals for them team. We have a bunch of expiring contracts.

Wake me when you have a comment that reflects reality.

Funny how people say " This is not the year! " When leafs are top 5 in the NHL.

Leafs have beat Tampa 2 times out of 3 this season.... How is Tampa "miles better than the leafs". Come on, you guys are so used to losing that you still think that leafs are utter trash, and are a wildcard team at best. LMAO. Get a reality check you delusional iiddddiooots.

So the solution is to wait at LEAST 2 more years, and let our guys ELCs expire?
And the thing is when pressed against the cap, you keep your picks because you don't have room, there are small windows you're in a position to add an elite D and fit him under the cap.

People rather stay the course to draft and develop Calen Addison with a 24th oa pick?

And a winning record vs the Bruins who are a 1 line team.

Right? Perpetual rebuild. Most of these posters dont remember or weren't there before fergy, burke.nonis so all they know is the garbage burke spewed. Oh, not in first place, trade all for picks. They seem to think if your team is playing 82 games, with babcock as a coach and are in the position they are in trying to win every night that the boys will understand''nope, its a business, trade all ufa for picks'' like what planet are these people on?

i think people overuse the word, 'triggered' too much due to a millennial trend to try and win points. i was simply pointing out that if rielly wasn't a 1d, then someone should be able to point to 30d, excuse me 31d better than him because there are 31 teams; my argument is that there aren't 31d better than him. i agree we can strengthen our blueline. i disagree that rielly isn't a #1. i don't think saying rielly is a 1d is an inane point; you may think so but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

also, if you choose a clickbait title, you should expect disagreements.

I've called people on this on here. we are still getting people saying the Leafs need to trade their UFAs for picks. It's pure insanity. That would not happen in any other market.
They are a top 5 team but no one seems aware.

There was more than 1 line making the Leafs look foolish last time they played.

Also, Heinen, Krejci, Spooner, Backes all say hi.

Even Debrusk and Nash are on pace for 40 pt seasons.

Krejci and Backes.. what if Boston picks up Ignila too? Those are tough match ups in 2012

Leafs beat Boston without Matthews and have a 3-1 record vs the Bruins on the season. Not scared of a average team one line team that played above their heads in January. Tarasenko-Schenn-Schwartz was thebest line in hockey until December, doesn't St.Louis scary in the West. Being the flavor of the month or two isn't a sample size to inspire fear.

I never said Rielly wasn't a 1D, 'clickbait title'???? What do I get for the clicks? Do I get ad revenue...

Rielly is a top 31 defenseman in the league? Nowhere near the mark of this thread.

'Clickbait title' epic post old man, now can we discuss the merits of the Leafs taking a run at another 1D or are Gen Xers too cool for that discussion?

Month or 2 is a small sample, but you are claiming our 3 and 1 record vs them holds a lot of weight??

Reilly's career is a good example of why the Leafs should look into McDonagh.

Many fans felt Reilly was the projected 1D. I think they felt that he was untouchable. He's good, but not great. He's not really a 1D.

Why fans now project Liljegren as a 1D is a head scratcher. How is it that he will project so high? Because he's a leaf?

Because he was slotted to go top 3 before missing a tonne of games in his draft year would be my guess.

Alao Babs hyping his "elite elite elite" skill would be another.

No you said, "Leafs look foolish last time they played." My response was the Leafs have a 3-1 record vs the Bruins...

So you think the Bruins are beasts, I think they're meh, are we done now?

Rielly QoC this season is what gives him a great case for being a legit 1D, the criticism is the sample size in relatively small. This is a breakout season for him I don't see him regressing. He's separating himself from the likes of TJ Brodie IMO and by the numbers. Is TJ a 1D? Or does Calgary have options to maximize him. I would like a situation where Babs can be creative and even find some sheltered minutes for Rielly for him to feast. Right now the Leafs are desperately dependent on Rielly and Gardiner's health. The need for another guy to carry a pair would put the Leafs on another level and create interesting options.

Boy would Trouba be an incredible piece to have.

Winnipeg parts with him shortly after Hell freezes over, but damn..... he would fit this team like a glove.
