It is probably a good threat to Kessel. Rutherford doesn't want to be held hostage by Kessel, so this is the way he can turn the tables and maybe get Kessel to relax some of his destination restrictions.

Yeah they should just fire their coach and maybe the gm. Roster is old you won't improve it in time for Crosby by dealing kessel.

Him and Malkin probably (I hope) won't screw the power play up as much as this past year .

It wouldnt surprise me if Kessel stays, but wonder how that will go, knowing that Pens tried to trade him, and dont want him there. He doesnt seem like person to be phased by many things, but he also seems like person that would hold a grudge as well. Last thing they would need is Kessel not giving a rats-ass and just half-assing it whole season cause he doesnt care any more.

It comes down to question, why do you want to stay somewhere when you are perhaps not really wanted there anymore?

This seems a bit strange and contradictory of everything we’ve heard so far. Earlier reports indicated he wasn’t happy with Sullivan and lack of playing time with Sid/Geno, but now he wants to stay?

Maybe this is fake news to make teams offer up more. If GM’s think a Kessel trade no longer “has to happen” or is being forced, maybe their offers go up since they no longer have leverage.

Who knows what to believe at this point. Regardless of what Phil wants, if JR can get a solid deal for him he should be traded because we clearly need a roster shakeup and we could stand to gain a few forwards who are more defensively responsible than him.

Malkin can play defense when he feels like it . Idk it seems smarter to get some cheap defensive plug to play opposite kessel
