Can't help but feel Bura and Connolly are gonna get abused physically in the POs. Eller hopefully puts his tank physique to good use and shields them well.

Would be interesting to see how the team would look with Oshie swapped with one of them, more speed on the top line + another heavy player on the 3rd line.

everytime we whine about the Caps not getting but marginally improved on a Presidents Trophy team we can look at the Lightning and hope for that.

Also, yes. The Lightning have a lot of injuries. Their roster is full of small players that wont hold up over the years and injury prone players that are breaking down.

The Caps health is a matter of team make up. Luck plays into it only so far as avoiding the freak accident. Even with that Neuvirth tripped coming onto the ice and missed 3 weeks. Varly is always missing games with a groin injury. Holtby is a horse.

This might also be a reason why the Caps don't want Hanzal among other players.

This is an important point.

Guys like Hotlby and Ovechkin have a track record of durability. Alzner just played 500 straight games and Carlson had a huge streak of his own prior to last years injury. Niskanen has missed 1 game in the last 4 years. Backstrom missed half a season due to that cheapshot but outside of that he's missed 12 games in 9 other years. Wilson is another and MJ is fairly durable too (10 games in last 3.5 seasons)

Varlamov and Neuvirth were infuriating at times.

Schoenfeld's Caps consistently had half their roster out at any given time in part due to the players they had and in part how Schoenfeld ran his team into the ground.

If you look at Eller's durability vs Hanzal its funny.

The tale of this season in the NHL has certainly been injuries and goalie's performances i.e. Tampa Bay, St. Louis.

So today's fun to think about but probably won't happen:

NYI are 5 points behind Flyers/Bruins with 3/5 games in hand. Those are the 2 teams tied for the last WC as of this post. They are 3/2 points behind Panthers/Canes with 4/2 games in hand. Those are the next two team behind the Flyers/Canes.

Hell, Sabers are the same amount of points back with 1 less game in hand. Tampa is last in the conference and I would say they are the team that could get the hottest out of the non-wildcard teams. This could get very interesting outside of the Metro's top 4 and the Habs.

I think Philly can turn it around but Boston....they are a tire fire and imploding.

Julien essentially calling out his GM is as if he is begging to get fired so he doesn't have to quit and give up the rest of the cash he is owed.

Toronto and Ottawa seem like a lock for 2/3 in the Atlantic. Montreal 1.

Caps/Pens/Rangers/Jackets are definitely making it in some combo.

That leaves exactly one spot for all the other teams to fight over.

I'd say Florida, Detroit, Buffalo, Devils and Boston are out for various reasons.

Tampa can't be this bad. Neither can Isles. Canes will be in the mix along with Philly.

Varlamov done for the season. Some things never change.

Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov will undergo hip surgery in Vail Thursday morning, and his 2016-17 season is over.

The operation is an attempt to eliminate the troublesome groin muscle issues that periodically have plagued Varlamov in recent years and made him unavailable to the Avalanche for several stretches this season. Noted hip specialist Marc Philippon will perform the surgery, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Steadman Clinic.

Shocker for sure.

Had so much promise but those injuries along with being a bit of a headcase (his adamant pronouncing of his first name, the incident with his girl, the fit he threw when we weren't just going to hand him the #1 goalie spot since he was constantly injured...)

Varly and Nervy both injury prone. The latter missed time again this year. At least one stint. Every season, iirc.

Periodically and recent? I thought he was healthier the last year or two but outsides of that it was constant going back to Hershey.

McPhee's best trade? Hmmm....

Eminger and a pick in order to draft Carlson.

That or Lang for Green/Flash (altho this one doesn't really count since it wasn't like he KNEW Green was going to be on the board)

He also got a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a good goalie prospect for inflated washed up Oates

Getting Carlson out from under the Flyers is the all time fleece. What the hell were the Flyers thinking?? The kid was local to them.

Teddy Ruth and a 2nd for Sergei Fedorov was a pretty slick move too, though

They traded their draft pick not Carlson. And the fact that Carlson went late in the first means scouts didn't think he would be this good. Evaluate the trade as Eminger for #28 overall, or whatever it was.
