Rantanen would be a great pick. I'd prefer him over Zacha, Barzal, Crouse or Connor, although I'd be really happy with any of them.

Still hoping we land Werenski though.

If Strome slips out of the top 5, he isn't getting to 9.

I'd draft rantanen and provorov over Strome.... His skating is just... Kid reminds me of jason allison. Huge OHL numbers, and a solid NHLer, but skating the way he did, he was never going to be elite. Not what i look for in top centers and it shortened his career considerably

I'm torn between D or F in the first round if there's a choice of either Werenski or one of the forwards. Gosh.

Not expecting Provorov to be available there. If he is, then absolutely him. Otherwise, no clue. I'm glad I'm not in charge.

And the BPA-route.. Who knows who's the BPA!

Source?? Stuart and Rathje were never going to be #1d men let alone studs.

as for Wishart, only by the Sharks org....

Baloney. Stuart was highly touted even drawing a few comparisons to Ray Bourque. Obvious that didn't happen but a lot of people (myself included) thought he was well on his way to becoming a No. 1 defenceman and possibly winning a Norris or two.

Rathje was well regarded as well but too many thought he would be a monster due to his size but it wasn't his game and I think that expectation got to him.

Ok not going to argue something so ridiculous. Asking me to provide a source from 1998 and 1992 is just stupid (no offense). Both were projected as #1 d-men in their upside. You're being near sighted and most likely letting hindsight influence your opinion.

I really like Provorov and will be happy with him in Teal, but to say we've never draft a d-man who had #1 upside is absurd...end conversation.

You're right. I remember them being very highly regarded prospects.

I'd be fine with Rantanen. I wouldn't be stoked but it would be a fine pick.

Pretty much how I feel & it's not at all surprising that the orgs is high on him. He's one of the older players in this draft & needs to work a bit on his skating but he's another that could potentially step right into the NHL.

Also, about that whole targeting the right players thing...seems that may still be a bit if an issue with this club!

Needs to work on his skating, sounds exactly like a sharks perfect choice to be drafted.

Reason #1 why it's hard to have any enthusiasm for this team...

I saw Rantanen said he thinks he could step right into the NHL next year and immediately I thought "Sharks lock".

Since there has been talk of drafting a d-man and needing a very high pick to get one, I updated my analysis data set and wanted to provide quick info. I am using .5 points per game as my definition of a "high end" defenseman given the emphasis on points, and because it's one of the readily available data points. Using that, here is the number overall drafted at, who it was, and year for all the defenseman since 1995 who meet the criteria and who played at least 60 games in the NHL.

Year Num. Player Pos Points Avg/ Game
1995 1 Bryan Berard D 0.52
2008 2 Drew Doughty D 0.51
2002 4 Joni Pitkanen D 0.53
2008 4 Alex Pietrangelo D 0.56
2002 5 Ryan Whitney D 0.54
2003 9 Dion Phaneuf D 0.53
2007 14 Kevin Shattenkirk D 0.59
2008 15 Erik Karlsson D 0.76
2000 29 Niklas Kronwall D 0.50
2004 29 Mike Green D 0.63
2008 38 Roman Josi D 0.51
2007 43 P.K. Subban D 0.62
2003 49 Shea Weber D 0.57
2002 54 Duncan Keith D 0.54
2004 61 Alex Goligoski D 0.50
2005 62 Kristopher Letang D 0.58
2009 64 Tyson Barrie D 0.56
2005 105 Keith Yandle D 0.56
2000 118 Lubomir Visnovsky D 0.56
1997 156 Brian Campbell D 0.50
2002 156 James Wisniewski D 0.50
1998 162 Andrei Markov D 0.58
2001 176 Marek Zidlicky D 0.51
1996 204 Tomas Kaberle D 0.57
2003 239 Tobias Enstrom D 0.50
2002 241 Dennis Wideman D 0.50
2003 245 Dustin Byfuglien D 0.58
2004 262 Mark Streit D 0.59

Moving up for Provorov

What roster player would it take to exchange 5OA with our 9th so we could draft Provorov? Wingels? Is it worth it?

Yet the Merc tweeted it again about an hour ago.

So? There is nothing in that article to suggest that's what the deal is. I'm sure Benning would like the #9 pick but don't you think DW would demand Horvat in exchange? Remember that Horvat isn't Bennings pick so he may be willing to part with him moreso than Virtanen.

You would think that if it was debunked they wouldn't continue to tweet it. I don't care either way. There's tons of speculation of what it could be and Bieska has to waive. I have a feeling that's how this whole thing got out to begin with.

The suspense of tomorrow is killing me in a good way. :)
