The nail in the coffin, on this game, was Bickel's knee injury. With the Gulls down to only five D-men, they managed a total of ZERO shots on goal in the 6 minutes and 29 seconds of the OT period.
Eakins put Montour and Theodore out on the same pairing to start the OT, and I think that was part of the undoing as well, because after that, there's Megna (who had a stellar game DESPITE being -3 on the scoresheet), and there's the college kids (Welinski and Cooper -- and Cooper is a halfling in size compared to the beasts of Ontario). I get the risk/reward of hoping to get an early OT goal with the two offensive-minded D-men, but it just seemed too much risk with not enough reward, from where I sat. Then again, hindsight is always 20-20.
This hurts a lot. We'll be up there tonight, in all likelihood to see a one-goal game end this series -- maybe two goals as the final margin if there's another empty-netter.
A note -- the sparse attendance at Sunday's game was still promoted in an email I got as "record-setting Game 3 attendance" -- maybe they meant for a playoff game, cause I've personally been to both AHL and ECHL games in the CBBA that far outdrew that Sunday game. Wheird.
