Nico is the most impressive rookie of the year to me.

Youngest player in the league who flat out earned a 1C spot. He plays a complete 200 foot game and he only gets better as the games get bigger.

Other rookies are older, and/or have more an easier lineup situation then him.

Why in the end he always stood above Butcher and Bratt too. Kid is going to be an absolute star.

I want to know why he isn't using his speed and hands more. That was a major part of his game pre-draft and even in the pre-season. Now its a rare sight seeing him fly up the wing with it. Bratt does it FAR more.

This is what makes him a great player. He can do many things ... and he is doing what the team needs most.

This is what i understand by : he makes the team a better team.

quite the opposite of a one pony trick.

To illustrate the full importance of it :
in Switzerland, their are few players, therefore a coach takes the players available and makes the best he can make out of it.
In NHL, their is such an abundance of players that coaches have their model ... and unless you have a super star, you will build your team on paper and fit the places with who best can achieve what is required by the role. Therefore not exploiting all aspects of a player.

The Hischier's skill you mention is not required by his role. This multi role ability is something that the public doesn't appreciate because it is unseen, but coaches are ready to pay premiums for it.
Besides, i am sure that when he will have accumulated more power, this aspect could be well more exploited.

(i think that this is what may have been among, if not THE reason he was chosen over Patrick (remember Shero repeating "he makes a team a better team"))

He is one of the best ES scorers in the league. Just normal PP production would absolutely have put him right up there with Barzal and Boeser.

I bet his PP production picks up. If he starts shooting more teams will have to respect that and he’ll get some goals and it will open up more passing options.

Of course this is all predicated on the PPs actually getting into the zone with puck control.

If you had told me he'd score 50-55 points, I would've taken it every day of the week. I can only imagine how good he'll be once he puts on some muscle. Most of the plays that are unsuccessful are him getting muscled off the puck. Once he's able to overcome that, I don't see anyone slowing him down.

NJ has Hayes and Boyle to handle the PP so they don’t need a skill guy like Nico. I mean the results speak for themselves. Who uses skill on the PP anymore that is so old school.

I disagree with you.

The league leaders in PP are Pitsburgh, Tampa, Winnipeg, San Jose, Nashville ... skilled teams with key skilled players in the PPs.

To enter the zone and establish the PP, you need this skill of dangling through a line of opponents and pass the puck on who is available. Then the center needs to have intelligence to move and create the opportunity.
To have a good system doesn't mean you don't need talent.
And the Devils are 20th in PP !! with 1 goal every 5 pp. the bests of the league are 1 goal for every 4 pp. So a bit of improvement would definitely be needed. PP is too important to expect to win the cup without it !

many days, you will be underwhelmed and having to survive and the PP will save your day. And i speak about the good teams.

I was being sarcastic. NJ fans have been frustrated with the coaching staff usage of slugs without skill on the PP. Hischier is the second best player on the team and he doesn’t play on the first unit but guys with little creativity and stone hands to match do get prime PP time.

Unfortunately, you wasted your time responding to what was actually a sarcastic post. :D

Good post, though.

Well considering our chances to make the playoffs went up this week, Nico's chances of playing 90 games instead of 80 are also going up, I don't have an issue of keeping his minutes down where you can until the playoffs begin. By then it'd be nice to see him on PP1 though.

It's hilarious that all these guys were ex-Rockies and Scouts except for Adams who was close enough to that lineage. Not like we haven't had some real good rookies here too.

The best thing about Nico being so good is how much pressure it takes off guys like Zacha and McLeod. Before Nico, we were banking on those two to be our top 6 centers. Now we only need one guy to pan out as a 2C.

It’s also pretty neat having a guy who is a 1C at 19. Which is the second hardest position to find.

Takes pressure off Zajac right now too.

This is what I've been saying the players ahead of him in the Calder race have at least two years of play draft development and that's huge. I'm so much more comfortable with having Nico at 18 compared to Boesser and Barzal at 20. His intangibles, hockey sense and two way game will set him apart.

Was ADAMS the really tall skinny guy from AZ?

He was undrafted I believe and had a heck of a season scoring over 30.

Yes, tall, great hands and shot.

We traded him to Vanc for Patrik Sundstrom who at the time was a star in the league.

Sundstrom was incredible in the '88 playoffs but back injuries hampered him a few seasons later which forced him to retire early.

Gagne had a few good seasons in NJ too and played on a kid line with Jeff Larmer and Aaron Broten, at the time one of the few glimmers of hope.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say he does get 20.

According to Corsica, Hischier should already have 17. His individual expected goals for in all situations is 17.83.

What's more I think his ice time relative to most first line centers is holding him back. His individual expected goals for/60 is 1.13, which is a higher marker than Connor McDavid.
