Mike loves him like his own son. That being said, as a Leafs fan, I'd give you a 4th round pick to take him from us.
The leafs are going to have to trade one of hyman/brown for cap reasons this summer unless Marleau waives his NMC.
So picks/prospects are the play here.
No they don't havw to at all IF there is a cap crunch it's only for a year at worst and besides that Zaitsev would go before either Hyman or Brown since Zaitsev makes more money
The leafs would trade forwards on incredibly cheap contracts to get out of a cap crunch?
Babcock would pay hyman out of his own pocket to keep him.

Most leaf fans would ship Brown out first.

He's on a 50+ point pace
It would be Brown without a second thought. Not only because Hyman is better, but Hyman plays LW and Brown is on a stacked RW.
Are we still doing this Zaitsev sucks thing? People can't evaluate defense on here it seems.
Nope i'm not but in a cap crunch if you have 3 non core pieces and you can only keep 2 and 2 make just over 2 million and the other makes 4.5, the 4.5 million dollar non core piece goes.
He works like a dog without the puck. I'll give him that. Would be nice if he did something productive when he gets it too.
Again, Hyman is only $2.25 million, which is solid given his production as a middle-6 guy (40 points last year, likely something similar or even better this year). Even if you trade him and replace him with a guy on an ELC, you are still only saving about $1 million. Not really a big saving under the cap there. Hyman's at a bit undermarket value now; cap strapped teams generally do not want to get rid of those guys until they price themselves out.The leafs are going to have to trade one of hyman/brown for cap reasons this summer unless Marleau waives his NMC.

Agree, however moving out Brown really should be something to look at. A guy like Grundstrom can easily fill in that role going forward.Again, Hyman is only $2.25 million, which is solid given his production as a middle-6 guy (4 points last year, likely something similar or even better this year). Again, Connor Brown's cap hit is $2.1 million, which is fairly normal for a bottom 6 guy. Even replacing him with Gunderstrom again saves what, $1 million? Sure, it could be nice to have a tiny bit extra in cap space, but it really isn't all that significant.A

It's 1 million but it's also not really necessary to keep Brown past this season. Trimming payroll and being efficient with your roster go hand in hand. Any excess money trimmed is a good thing.Again, Connor Brown's cap hit is $2.1 million, which is fairly normal for a bottom 6 guy. Even replacing him with Gunderstrom again saves what, $1 million? The only really painful contracts the Leafs still have are Marleau (and at least he still produces well) and the money they retained from Kessel (that still burns). The team is actually pretty efficient cap-wise. Hainsey's $3 million coming off the books this off-season is also a plus. In a perfect world, the Leafs could replace him internally with a guy like Liljegren next season, but he may not be ready.

I don't know why folks think some good player who plays an effective bottom six role at 2m is such a bad cap hit. As you suggest you have to replace fellow for 1m. If you really want to get value in a trade, trading a 6.5m Nylander to free that cap space might be the best route to go....if you need cap to shore up another position.
Leafs are in the position of having three true stars....Tavares, Mathews, and Marner on the team long term,...in their prime Not to many teams can say that.
