The leafs are going to have to trade one of hyman/brown for cap reasons this summer unless Marleau waives his NMC.

So picks/prospects are the play here.

The leafs would trade forwards on incredibly cheap contracts to get out of a cap crunch?

No they don't havw to at all IF there is a cap crunch it's only for a year at worst and besides that Zaitsev would go before either Hyman or Brown since Zaitsev makes more money

yikes.

If zaitsev plays well enough the rest of the year he'll have value. One of marleau/zaitsev have to go for long term cap room anyways

They need to cut salary next year if they want to fit all of marner/nylander/matthews in. Not to mention if they want to get gardiner for cheap, where's the savings coming from?

I'm assuming Marleau doesn't waive and zaitsev is staying.

Why sell him low? He seems likely to put up 40 points again and be a good grinder/“get in the dirty area” player. Teams need a couple guys like that and at $2.25 million, it isn’t like he is overpaid. He obviously won’t net the Leafs the top-4 RHD they need, so why trade him off and lose the useful skills he brings (at a reasonable cap hit), for something in return that doesn’t address what the leafs actually need?

It would be Brown without a second thought. Not only because Hyman is better, but Hyman plays LW and Brown is on a stacked RW.

Are we still doing this Zaitsev sucks thing? People can't evaluate defense on here it seems.

He's on a 50+ point pace

And Matthews is on pace for 117 goals. So?

Giving a 1st round pick for a guy like Hyman is nonsense. Yeah he is valuable for his team, but that doesn't mean he's got any real value in a trade. The hymans and the komarovs are the easiest players to replace, after all. That's why you don't sign them to a $4 million deals either.

Nope i'm not but in a cap crunch if you have 3 non core pieces and you can only keep 2 and 2 make just over 2 million and the other makes 4.5, the 4.5 million dollar non core piece goes.

Or when you have a part of your team that is stacked and a part of your team that is one of the weakest in the league, you keep the only solid piece in that needed spot and move what would be a 4th liner in a strong spot.

Zaitsev is the only NHL regular D on the right side. Right now he looks like a solid 2nd pairing RD which is by far one of the most valuable things to the Leafs. Oz looks like he might be able to carve out a career as a #5 on the bottom pair RD. The team is much worse moving Z than if they move Brown.

Again, Hyman is only $2.25 million, which is solid given his production as a middle-6 guy (40 points last year, likely something similar or even better this year). Even if you trade him and replace him with a guy on an ELC, you are still only saving about $1 million. Not really a big saving under the cap there. Hyman's at a bit undermarket value now; cap strapped teams generally do not want to get rid of those guys until they price themselves out.

Agree, however moving out Brown really should be something to look at. A guy like Grundstrom can easily fill in that role going forward.

Hyman won't be traded unless hes a throw in on some big deal. 2.25m for what he gives the Leafs is too valuable to the team's makeup

Again, Connor Brown's cap hit is $2.1 million, which is fairly normal for a bottom 6 guy. Even replacing him with Gunderstrom again saves what, $1 million? Sure, it could be nice to have a tiny bit extra in cap space, but it really isn't all that significant.

The only really painful contracts the Leafs still have are Marleau (and at least he still produces well) and the money they retained from Kessel (that still burns). Zaitsev's also is above market value, but at least he is a minute muncher and looks ok so far this season now he is healthy The team is actually pretty efficient cap-wise. Hainsey's $3 million coming off the books this off-season is also a plus. In a perfect world, the Leafs could replace him internally with a guy like Liljegren next season, but he may not be ready.

There is room for a little cap-savings next season for Toronto, but not much. most of the guys on the team currently under contract are at or below market value (Rielly and Kadri's contracts still make me smile).

It's 1 million but it's also not really necessary to keep Brown past this season. Trimming payroll and being efficient with your roster go hand in hand. Any excess money trimmed is a good thing.

I don't know why folks think some good player who plays an effective bottom six role at 2m is such a bad cap hit. As you suggest you have to replace fellow for 1m. If you really want to get value in a trade, trading a 6.5m Nylander to free that cap space might be the best route to go....if you need cap to shore up another position.
Leafs are in the position of having three true stars....Tavares, Mathews, and Marner on the team long term,...in their prime Not to many teams can say that.

Toronto is going to be a top-heavy team in the coming years, and overall that is a good thing.
