NHL rule 43 says checking from behind is a penalty.

I need to see the hit on Nico as I didn’t see it.

But I do know if the player with the puck is aware a hit is coming and gets hit from behind in open ice the refs won’t call it. Refs have to deem the player as unaware of the impending hit or vulnerable which is hard to do as a puck carrier because that player is the most aware player on the ice. Its a weird grey area.
