Meh, would have hoped for a 2nd if there's 50% retention, but that's fine, the market isn't as strong now for rangy d than it is at the deadline, just unfortunate injuries weren't timely

This move was always about opening up roster spot, not about clearing cap space

Good pickup for the Caps. He's still young by D standards. Vegas showed what a big, physical defence can do.
Hopefully his back holds up.

Good trade for Washington is it's 50%. Good trade for Montreal if not. It gives them an extra 4m to take on a bad contract for more assets.

Less than what he could have returned if he just stayed healthy.

A far cry from the Chiarot-like return we were told was going to happen!

Who are they clearing cap for? It sounds like they're also trying to move Allen to clear cap.
No one they just had a logjam at LHD with Matheson, Harris, Guhle and Xhekaj

Hated the idea at full salary, less bummed if it’s 50% retention. The Caps have a talented but young left defense in Sandin, Fehervary, Alexeyev, and Johansen so Edmunson adds some size and experience.

They can flip him at the deadline if need be.

All those Edmundson for EDM 1st proposals aged well.

I think he may have been able to return a 1st at the deadline had he been healthy. Unfortunately it appears he has chronic back problems which has impacted him severely. Players like Edmundson are at peak value at the trade deadline, and over the past 2 seasons he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. If he can, he’s a player you win with in the playoffs.

Wish him well and hopefully he can stay healthy.

Once they sign Fehervary they’ll have 7 D so they can sit him if he’s less than 100%

I think it is a fair deal both sides. If the Caps are not a playoff team they can trade him off at the deadline and as long as he is healthy get what they paid pack in trade.

For the Habs it opens a spot for their kids to get more ice time. Plus now they can get UFA shopping and see what they can bring in.

Just bubble wrap him and have him come back for the playoffs.
