Great trade for Washington. Eddys injury unfortunately killed his value, but Habs clearly moving vets for youngsters and we had too many LH dmen. Assuming he’s healthy, he can slide onto a 2nd pair quite easily and bring steady and strong defensive play.

For the Habs, this deal is all about making roster space for the young D they have on hand, while also getting some positive assets in trade for a veteran made redundant by the many younger guys at LD.

For Washington, this trade is all about getting a tough-as-nails D on the cheap that could help them be tougher to play against all season as they look to make Ovechkin's last years in the league meaningful.

Also, if Washington is out of the playoffs picture by the time the trade deadline comes around, and Edmunson is healthy, I could see them retain half again on Edmunson's contract and trade him as cheap depth to a contender. This allows them to potentially recoup some assets (possibly even more than they gave if Edmunson has a good season and is healthy) even if worst-case scenario happens and they aren't competitive.

All of which to say that the trade is pretty good for both sides and makes sense overall.

Edmundson has been cooked since the 2021 cup final run.

Multiple injuries including back surgery since then. His game took a real dive after 2021.

sad to see him go, and obviously the return isn't amazing, but there's too much risk to keep him. Knowing the habs, the moment he's gone from montreal he'll be healthy and won't miss time. Good luck eddy

hughes fell off a cliff from his 1st offseason
Did he? His first year was always gonna be easier, everyone knew what remained on the roster was going to be a lot more difficult to pass to other teams, doubly so if no one can stay healthy.

But his contracts are still very good, the trades obviously remain to be seen but the logic has stayed consistent throughout with all his moves.

In another thread I had him being moved for roughly a 3d, so I guess I'm not too bad at this.

Same thing with Bergevin a decade ago... the first few moves are the easiest, moreso when you are forced into a rebuild and stop caring about winning.

I like how everyone was wrong about Chiarot's value and they are taking it all out here, especially ignoring the obvious caveat that he has never been healthy enough for that value.

Kindergarten stuff here, per usual
Except you forgot when Montreal fans were arguing about his value many fans pointed out his injuries.

Joel Edmundson should be a fine 3rd pairing defender with limited minutes if he can stay healthy.

Washington should be solid defensively if everyone can stay healthy.

Montreal just adding more draft capital is a good move for an aging player.

Wow people are really, really dumb in this thread attempting to give receipts where there are none.
There are enough posting on the subject that acts as an receipt. A receipt is just proof of a purchase. A posting is proof it was said. So who is dumb?

Never thought he would get a 1st on his own last season. If he had been healthy for a few months before the trade deadline and looked good Edmundson and a 2nd for a mid to late 1st was the most I would have been looking for.

Exactly the type of player the Caps are looking for to remain noncompetitive. He is a little young for us but does he maybe have a old ACL tare or something to make up for it? Ah yes I see he has been injured prior! Perfect!

Except when the receipts are for a different store. Hence the dumb people.

Number one, nobody believed he, or Monahan or anyone else, would fetch anything significant unless they were injury free and producing like they were before the injury. When it was clear they wouldn't, things changed.

Number two, people are in here talking shit as if they themselves and/or the fan bases they represent haven't done exactly the same thing.

So yeah, dumb people.

If he stays healthy he can actually play a top4 role with the right partner. Which is pretty good for a 3rd and a 7th.

Big "if" though, his back is the issue.

The dumb people are the ones who can't see how fans hoping for a return under optimal conditions isn't the same thing as expecting the same return under altogether different conditions.
