I do not believe we should wait around 3 years for the chance that a guy we draft with a top pick will turn into an impact player. A high pick forward has a greater chance of making an impact sooner.
Why shouldn't we wait 3 years? Ekblad is actually the most NHL ready player in this draft and I think he could immediatly improve our PP, which is a big need for the Panthers. The Sams are not ready this year, so they would be in the lineup a year from now and they would most likely centered the 3rd line or try to learn to be a winger. Huberdeau did it, but he's still struggling to make a significant impact 3 years after being drafted.
This team cannot survive another 3 years of waiting, we need improvement in 1-2 years. The only way we achieve that goal is to roll the dice on a forward (that will likely show promise/bust in 1-2 years) and gain a couple proven defensemen via other means. Even overpaying a bit if we have to.
I assume you are being hyberbolic when you say that this team can not survive the next 3 years if the Panthers draft a defenseman. The impact of the forwards that the Panthers can draft won't be significant before 3 years anyway. It sounds like you think the only way the Panthers are going to get help and better for the next 2 years is at this draft, with that first round pick, nothing else. You seem to forget about free agency and the possibility of trading players to improve the team in 1-2 years.
I mean, the team could draft Ekblad and trade Kuli for a top 6 forward (Parenteau) and sign some UFA. Campbell-Niskanen, Quincey(Benoit)-Gud, Bellemore (Weaver)-Ekblad. Suddenly, this team has a quite good defense.

I agree with you that this team needs help, but I don't think we should depend on the 1st pick to improve our roster in the immediate future. It's simply isn't the year to expect immediate help.
