I'm guessing they decided that Mantha wasn't far enough ahead of the player to make it a clean breakaway.

But it so often seems to come down to if the ref has the guts to call it.

Gotta get it out of the defensive zone first to shoot it. On the rare occasion that they get it into LA's zone, the D can't hold the point.

Mantha seems to have woken up but that backhand pass from beside the net is so frustrating.

Yes he makes a nice pass from beside the net but then stands straight up and admires his pass instead of moving in front of the net for a potential rebound. So then when the rebound comes all he can do is bend over and reach for the puck. Having no leverage, he loses the battle.
