I mean there is no defense. This thread will only escalate if Wilson fans make it happen.
I like Wilson and think that, by far, most of his previous incidents were clean hits gone bad, so to speak, but there's no defending this one. The discussion should start at ten games and go up from there, but I'll guess that he gets five.

context does matter. 166 games without incident. Per rules he’s not a repeat offender in DoPS eyes

it’s absolutely a hockey hit. “Play hard/physical, momentum rah rah”

there are players going for big hits on that on a number of teams.

is it unnecessary to make a hit there? Sure, but in no different sense than literally any other hit made ever. I mean, you’ve got a stick.

big hits are and have always been legal. Fans will probably want that changed in a few years, but right now he’s allowed to make that hit.

he came from the side, which is allowed, and as a player was rotating he hit arm/shoulder first, and landed squarely on the chest with his shoulder. His hands tucked to his chest made contact on the follow through.
How you're seeing shoulder to chest is mind boggling here.

That hit is nowhere near as bad as all the whiny babies in this thread are making it out to be.

Looked clean to me, when Wilson goes for the head he’s a lot more obvious than this. He ran his shoulder into Carlo’s armpit, not even his head so what’s the big deal?

Yup right under the armpit and then drove his head into the glass, you can’t deny the footage no matter how you spin it..not clean as you say

The refs LITERALLY are allowed to call this a major and then video review it just to be sure. They didn't even do that. These f***ing morons are out here calling stick waves near the hands 'hooking' and 'slashing' all year but can't be bothered to use the tool the league explicitly gives them to handle these situations where a player is hospitalized.

They didn't call a penalty at all. There's a half dozen weak ass calls every game. This crew didn't give two shits about player safety.

These morons shouldn't work another game. This is becoming a league wide issue.

For those of you saying Carlo was "just standing there" or "needs to be more aware"... Did you even watch the video at at full speed?

He JUST got to pick and won his board battle. How many of you have never played hockey before? You NEED to have your head down during board battles.

After having time to reflect, I don't think it's a bad hit. What's worse is what Vrana did. First he crosschecks, accidentally crosschecks again from being pushed from behind... but then angles both legs to get body position to hop on Carlo's back and drive his stick into the back of the neck of an injured player. What he did is 10x worse than Wilson's hit

38 pages for 0 minutes penalty ahahaha

Listen, if the Wilson haters (I mean NHL refs) didn’t even gave him 2 minutes it means there was nothing criminal. Haters on HFB have to stop their BS.

This (Carlo’s unfortunate injury) is what happens when a 4th line plug poke the bear in the 1st game of a back to back in a regular season.

The problem for Caps opponents throughout the years when the game goes physical is that the Caps leaders Ovi & co can respond by themselves and hit you hard when somebody try to act like a big boy against them. Caps players are no soft.

But when the physicality elevates in a Caps game, the other team better be ready for unfortunates outcomes when they start to poke the bear.

The only guy to blame for Carlo’s injury is Frederic. No one else.

But you can see the moment he looked down when he should have looked up. He won the puck to his side boxing out Vrana and then, instead of looking up to see if support was coming, he looked down to find it first.

BS. Why?

Because things like line changes happen while play is going on and such. What are they to do, ring a dinner bell each time he gets on the ice?

There's a lot of flaws in that kind of talk.
Ask any former hockey player and they will tell you that you have t be aware of who's on the ice.

He looked down because he lost the puck in his feet. This shouldnt be this hard to understand. He also has no time to brace for the hit regardless as Wilson was on his before he even finished his board battles.

Nothing wrong with this hit other than Carlo putting himself in a dangerous position. He had the puck, knew the hit was coming, yet made no effort to protect himself.

You have to expect an opposing player is going to finish his check. His back wasn't turned.

If he would have braced himself and stood tall like a man, Wilson would have made shoulder to shoulder contact. For some reason Carlo sagged and lowered his head. It's unfortunate and totally his fault.

Torres was a 5th overall pick who had a higher P/GP than Wilson. If a superior player was sent packing 5 years ago...

Not even a teeny bit of fault to Wilson?

Trust me, I'd be more than happy to see Wilson never play another game. But the onus is on the player to protect himself. Carlo made a mistake and it's unfortunate. You have to respect opposing players finishing their checks. You can't leave yourself in a compromising position and hope guys won't hit you.
