It's no worse than goals per game, at least it factors in ice time.

It's far worse than goals per game. Goals per game at least gives you an idea of what a player is capable of with more games, provided it's over a large enough sample. All strength G/60 factors in ice time, sure, but not the percentage of ice time you spend in each situation. It punishes players who penalty kill and rewards players like Laine who spend a greater percentage of their time on the PP than at ES. A player could theoretically be the best G/60 player at ES and on the PP and still not be the best G/60 player in all situations. It's useless.

That's fair, it should take out PK. Didn't think of that.

But even taking out PK leaves the problem of unbalanced splits between PP and ES time. For instance, last year, Laine spent 18.2% of his ice time on the PP, while Matthews spent only 11.8% of his ice time on the PP. Given the PP is easier to score, that makes a huge difference. Matthews had a G/60 in combined ES and PP icetime of 1.82. If Laine played the same minutes per game as Matthews and kept his G/60 at ES and on the PP, his combined G/60 would have been 1.71. Now if Matthews played Laine's minutes, they would have been worse than Laine's. So there's no all encompassing stat that's going to give and answer for them. So far Matthews has been the best ES goalscorer in the league and Laine the best PP goalscorer. Pick your poison

Best goalscorers aren't decided in 6 game hot streaks. It's still Ovechkin for now.

How about in 2+ seasons? Since Laine entered the NHL, he leads the league in scoring and his average icetime is several minutes under Ovechkins. So his pace is obviously better than OV's.

Ovechkin's '17 season isn't indicative of the player he is. His resume speaks for itself before and since. He's led the league in goals 5 of the past 6 seasons and this year is too early to call, and a convenient time to compare, again while Laine is on a hot streak. You're also leaving out the playoffs where Ovechkin just led the league in goals with 15 in 24 while Laine had only 5 in 17
