i think his voice is okay, but the caps have awful audio mix from the arena they play in..... rink sound is way too low, commentator sound on the other hand, is jacked up way too high.... when joe b yells score! i jump out the chair, way to loud!As a Caps fan I think Joe Benninati is awful,
I don't understand how the Wild guys are hardly ever mentioned in these threads every time.
The PBP guy has the same cadences as Jack Edwards (who I love) if you removed the ability to credit the opposition, calls opposing goals correctly, and at least be entertaining.
Edit: Ah very good, I see I already made this comment in here last February.
I don't understand what everyone love about Rick Jeanneret, he sounds like a chain smoker trying to call a game to me.
I'd bet its gonna be John Forslund and rightfully so.Pierre: What was the name of the evil lion in The Lion King?
Doc: SCAR!
Seriously, Emrick has one of the least broadcast-ready voices out of all the national announcers, but he makes up for it in enthusiasm and knowledge.
Wonder who NBC picks as their A-team guy once he finally retires.
Steve Mears is a downgrade from Steigerwald. He doesn't have an announcer's voice. He sounds like they pulled some fan and put him in the booth. He has some annoying tendencies such as stating the ages of players multiple times throughout the broadcast. He leans heavily on the phrase, "Dusts it off". And the cringey "Sticks down, pucks down" opening line every game.
I understand he's a regional guy but the Leafs game against the Avs this week reminded just how bad Altitude's play-by-play guy is.

I strongly disagree. Mears isn't an incredible sportscaster by any stretch of the imagination, but he's essentially an average-quality pbp guy. Steigerwald was not only unprofessional - airing grievances against other teams and players from the broadcast booth, making inappropriate jokes, fixating on specific players and topics to the point where he was ignoring game action - he also was starting to lose track of which player was which. It felt like he was misidentifying players more than once a game in his last years in the booth. Mears can at least get the names right.
While I live in Pittsburgh, at times, there are ways to get around the Root Broadcasts. I definitely had to do that.I'm a Penguins fan and I can't even stand the Penguins commentators.
