Which Team Would Have Benefitted the Most From Taking the Player that Went 1 Pick Later?

Shoulda got one game in
Since I became a hockey fan in 1990, and using that as a baseline up until a couple of years ago, the Sabres haven't really been burned by the player picked after too often. This not including players who had decent careers but were nothing special (Paul Kruse, Anatoli Semenov etc.)

1991: Picked Jason Young. Steve Konowalchuk to Washington went with next pick (3rd round)

1992: Picked David Cooper. Sergei Krivokrasov to Chicago went with next pick (1st round)
1992: Picked Jozef Cierny. Jeff Shantz to Chicago went with next pick (2nd round)
1992: Picked Todd Simon. Nikolai Khabibulin to Winnipeg with next pick (9th round)

1993: Picked Denis Tsygurov. Brendan Morrison to New Jersey with next pick (2nd round)

1994: Picked Curtis Brown. Jose Theodore to Montreal with next pick (2nd round)
1994: Picked Craig Millar. Tomos Vokoun to Montreal with next pick (9th round)

1996: Picked Scott Buhler. Craig Adams to Hartford with next pick (9th round)

1998: Picked Dmitri Kalinin. Robyn Regehr to Colorado with next pick (1st round)

1999: Picked Barret Heisten. Nick Boynton to Boston with next pick (1st round)

2001: Picked Jiri Novotny. Tim Gleason to Los Angeles with next pick (1st round)

2006: Picked Dennis Persson. Patrik Berglund to St. Louis with next pick (1st round)

2008: Picked Tyler Ennis. John Carlson to Washington with next pick (1st round)
2008: Picked Corey Feinhage. Adam Henrique to New Jersey with next pick (3rd round)

2009: Picked Zack Kassian. Dmitri Kulikov to Florida with next pick (1st round)

2010: Picked Mark Pysyk. Kevin Hayes to Chicago with next pick (1st round)
2010: Picked Steve Shipley. Joonas Donskoi to Florida with next pick (3rd round)

2011: Picked Joel Armia. Nathan Beaulieu to Montreal with next pick (1st round)

2012: Picked Mikhail Grigorenko. Radek Faksa to Dallas with next pick (1st round)
2012: Picked Zemgus Girgensons. Cody Ceci to Ottawa with next pick (1st round)
2012: Picked Justin Kea. Esa Lindell to Dallas with next pick (3rd round)

2014: Picked Sam Reinhart. Leon Draisatl to Edmonton with next pick (1st round)

2016: Picked Alex Nylander. Mikhail Sergachev to Montreal with next pick (1st round)
2016: Picked Brett Murray. Victor Mete to Montreal with next pick (4th round)

1998 is a wash. Curtis Brown and Theodore is a wash with a slight edge to Montreal (although would he have ever gotten a chance with Hasek there?) 2008 really hurts. I would much rather have Carlson and Henrique over Ennis and someone who never made it. 2010 is a wash. As is 2014 and 2016 remains to be seen with the 1st rounders.

Clearly, the Sabres have 1st round issues or just miss out on a goaltender.

Decided to go back some drafts for Toronto;

2018: too early to say, but I wanted Addison (53) at 52
2017: Early, but nothing
2016: No one taken 1 Pick after, but Mete (100) was taken 1 Pick before us and I’m certain he was our target.
2015: Sebastian Aho (35) over Travis Dermott (34). That said, Dermott is a heck of a consolation prize. Nicolas Roy (96) over Jesper Lindgren (95). Both are still developing so we’ll see.
2014: nothing
2013: nothing
2012: nothing
2011: Joe Morrow over Tyler Biggs and Philip Danault over Stuart Percy.... man thought Percy was a steal. Ryan Dzingle over Max Everson
2010: Bryan Rust over Sondre Olden. Brenden Gallagher over Daniel Brodin.
2009; Brian Dumolin over Kenny Ryan. Brandon Pirri over Jesse Blacker. Reilly Smith over Jamie Devane.

Looking at the Bruins top line. A late 1st rounder in Pasta, 2nd rounder in Bergeron and 3rd rounder in Marchand.

2003
- LA Kings take Konstantin Pushkaryov at 44 instead of Patrice Bergeron in the 2nd round. Konstantin played in 17 games NHL games and put up 5 points. Imagine the Kings with Kopitar and Bergeron down the middle, could have more cups. The walking alphabet played in the minors but mostly in the KHL where he never got more then 17 pts in a season.

2006 - Islanders take as the 70th pick in the 3rd round Robin Figren and the next pick is Brad Marchand. Figren never made it out of the AHL and is playing in Sweden. Where his season career high was 31 pts. Maybe Tavares stays with the Isles if he has Marshy on his wing and Bailey. Or Marchand, Barzal, Bailey as a line right now.

2014 - Vancouver takes at #24 Jared McCann , Bruins grab Pasta at 25. McCann is still young and can turn out decent with 23 goals in 188 NHL games to date. Imagine Pasta and Pettersson together.

2012- Colton Parayko ahead of Frederick Andersen. This one is interesting because our RHD would be **** without CP but having Freddy as a goalie would be good too.

The Flames would’ve benefited greatly had they picked Nikita Kucherov at pick #58 instead of Tyler Wotherspoon at #57. It’s actually a fact that the Flames really wanted Kucherov and Gaudreau but thought they could get both a little bit later in the draft.

Yeah, I think the Canes win this game. Also Gregory Hofman before Johnny Gaudreau in 2011 and Brendan Woods before Connor Hellebuyck in 2012. At least they didn't skip on Erik Karlsson in 2012.

In 2006 Colorado picked Ryan Stoa in the 2nd round at 34. The next pick was Marc Edouard Vlasic

In 2008 Colorado picked Cameron Gaunce in the 2nd round at 50. The next pick was Derek Stepan

Lol.

Sharks

1991

Sharks select Pat Falloon 2nd overall (crickets)
Devils select Scott Niedermayer 3rd overall (and then a few picks later, there's Peter Forsberg... Yeah.. heartbreaking)

There's also:

In 2005, picking Devon Setoguchi at #8 and then a few picks later LA grabs Anze Kopitar. (Not the very next pick but pretty close)
In 2016, picking Timo Meier at #9 and Colorado picking up Mikko Rantanen at #10.

2015: Anthony Cirelli over JC Beaudin and Denis Malgin over Andrei Mironov

Really happy with Washingtons draft. The only one from the first round where I belive the Caps would be better right now is Boeser>Samsonov, but Samsonov might make that closer in the future. Anyway having an elite winger on an already pretty stacked Caps team wouldnt be that bad I guess.

I would still take Vrana over Honka. None of them have taken the steps expected from them yet, but I really like what I see of Vrana.
Burakovsky>Shinkaruk
Forsberg>Grigorenko (No need to mention what happened after)
Wilson>Hertl (This one is closer, but considering what Wilson brings to the Caps I wouldnt consider switching and Hertl havent proved he is good enough offensively to equal all Wilson brings to the game)

From 2012-15 theres probably only two players that I would switch from other rounds. Stephenson to Gostisbehere and Di Pauli to Paquette.
