For the Blues: 1998 Draft
Pick 170: Blues select: Andrei Trochinsky
Pick 171: Red Wings select: Pavel Datsyuk

I think Hartford had it the worst in 1989.
Edit: Never mind. Just saw the post above say the same thing. Yeah, 1989 was brutal for Hartford

Edit: I take my Blues answer back. Correct answer is 1984
Pick 50: Toby Ducolon
Pick 51: Patrick Roy

Imagine the 80s/90s/00s Blues with Patrick Roy.

The worst thing abotu Datsyuk is the only reason the Blues didn't draft him is because they thought they could get him even later. They were 100 percent certain they were the only team in the NHL who even knew the kids name.

Buffalo ainec.
A.Nylander 8
Sergachev 9

still have faith in nylander but sergachev is the real deal. especially when our entire fan base was screaming for 1 of Sergachev/Chychrun/Macavoy Defence was the need and murray went with nylander thinking he'd be ready to play next to eichel the following year.

2009 Draft. New York Islanders. We would have had a player of good character.

The one that got away.

Elias Pettersson could be on the Avs right now...

He could be, but they selected Cale Makar. I don't know if we can say Avs would have benefited the most here. What they got might be a very valuable player for a team that has a great offense.

Really, because there's pages filled with deals that would have benefited teams more. Maybe adding Sergachev now to a Hot team would be fantastic for Buffalo, but I don't think this is the winner right here.

Avs 1st round since the full season lockout:

2006 - Mark Mitera instead of Chris Stewart - loss
2007 - Alex Plante instead of Kevin Shattenkirk - loss
2008 - none
2009 - Evander Kane instead of Matt Duchene - loss
2010 - Austin Watson instead of Joey Hishon - win
2011 - Jonathan Huberdeau instead of Gabriel Landeskog - loss
2011 - Ryan Murphy instead of Duncan Siemens - wash, both aren't NHLers
2012 - none
2013 - Sasha Barkov instead of Nathan MacKinnon - loss
2014 - Jared McCann instead of Conner Bleackley - win
2015 - Lawson Crouse instead of Mikko Rantanen - massive loss
2016 - Logan Brown instead of Tyson Jost - loos for now
2017 - Elias Petterson over Cale Makar - impossible to tell, Elias is looking amazing in the NHL and Makar hasn't played yet in the NHL
2018 - Ty Smith over Martin Kaut - impossible to tell, but Kaut has been great in the AHL so far, so I personally wouldn't like this trade

There have been literal Hall of Famers picked on late rounds, just after scrubs who didn't even last in the AHL.

come back with examples next time not sass
Examples are posted in this thread. Which was the first thing I said to you.

In the first few post Fleury - Nylander is a better example. That's exactly the player canes need right now.

Florida with Kuznetsov.

That's without going more than 5 post down.

I get it, Buffalo is doing really well and you'd think the team could be dominate top Eastern conference team with the pick you're talking about. But I don't think this is even close to the top examples.

Since they relocated to Winnipeg, first round only, the Jets have:

2011 Mark Scheifele
2012 Jacob Trouba
2013 Josh Morrissey
2014 Nikolaj Ehlers
2015 Kyle Connor
2015 Jack Roslovic*
2016 Patrik Laine
2016 Logan Stanley*
2017 Kristian Vesalainen

If they picked one spot later every time, they could have had:

2011 Sean Couturier
2012 Slater Koekoek
2013 Alex Wennberg
2014 Nick Ritchie
2015 Thomas Chabot
2015 Noah Juuleson
2016 Pierre Luc Dubois
2016 Kieffer Bellows
2017 Ryan Poehling

* Two first round picks in this year.

There's not a lot I would change to be honest.

Some interesting ones from the famous '03 draft:

NYR picked Hugh Jessiman over Dustin Brown.
LA picked Mike Sullivan over Byfuglien.
NYI- Picked Dimitry Chernykh and Cody Blanshan over Shea Weber and Tobias Enstrom, respectively.
Colorado picked Linus Videll and David Liffiton over Joe Pavelski and Jimmy Howard, respectively.

So, my Uncle is a massive Oilers fan.

He always moaned and ranted about the 1990 draft.

I know it is not 1 spot after, but 2-3 spots, but still.

At #17 Oilers pick Scott Allison 0 NHL Games - 2 and 3 picks later we find Tkachuk and Brodeur Combined 2467 NHL Games.

At #38 Oilers pick Alexandre Lagault 0 NHL Games - 2 picks later Michael Renberg is picked 661 NHL Games.

At #67 Oilers pick Jöel Blain 0 NHL Games - 1 pick later Chris Tamer is picked 644 NHL Games.

At #101 Oilers pick Greg Louder 0 NHL Games -1 pick later Paul DiPietro is picked 192 NHL Games.

At #122 Oilers pick Keijo Säilynoja 0 NHL Games - 1 pick later Craig Conroy is picked 1009 NHL Games.

At #143 Oilers pick Mike Power 0 NHL Games - at #148 and #156 Andrei Kovalenko and Peter Bondra are picked Combined 1701 NHL Games.

Ouch!

Pens could have taken Trouba in 2012 instead of Pouliot. That would have been a good call.

Delving deeper...

Ben Hanowski for Tyson Barrie (63OA 2009 for 64OA) would have been nice.
