Edmonton
Every year I think ... this ... this is the year.

The one...

Where Edmonton doesn't end its season in embarrassing fashion since 2006.

I understand you're going to leave disappointed if you don't win the cup. Lose a hard fought series etc.
But the Oilers do it on a level that no other team can match in my opinion.

Almost every year they missed the playoffs.. they didn't just miss playoffs.. usually the season was virtually over come December.. and in some cases.. October. f***ing embarrassing.
Then the Oilers make the playoffs in 2017 and play awesome.... only to have what may be the biggest melt down in history in game 5 against Anaheim.. an embarrassing collapse of epic proportions. That to go along with one of the worst video review calls I've ever seen with the great pad departening haha.

2017-2018 their season is done pretty much at the end of December when they shut it down after xmas. Something happend over that holiday I swear cuz Lucic was a shell of himself after for this team.
2018-2019 Team improves by 1 point? honestly can't remember when they were pretty much out of it.. but I don't remember much of a fight for a playoff spot since they finished a bazillion points behind.
2019-2020 Team is whooping ass and looking pretty good before covid.. then covid happens and the playins. The Oilers get their shit handed to them by Chicago in the first round.
2020-2021 Once again they play pretty good during the season... come up with a measuring stick series against Toronto and completely shit the bed for three games (They couldn't get up for it and it foreshadows the playoffs imo.) Playoffs come and Edmonton dips their pinky toe in the water and get f***ing worked over in 4 straight. They decide to play some hockey in the third game only to go full de ja f***ing vu and blow a 3 goal lead in game 3.

So here's my take for 2021-2022
- I don't know what's going to happen for the Oilers. But I do know it's going to be f***ing embarrassing haha. Everyone will be shaking their head thinking.. Oilers gonna Oil.

Loved Gabe Vilardi in his draft year. Thought he was the next Mark Stone and had him #1 on my list.

He's not finished developing and has had major back problems that set him back, but definitely overrated him.

3 hot takesnfocused on mtl:

1) AK46 to be a top scorer in the league (for the uncultured here, Andrei Kostitsyn)

2) That we stole that Gomez trade. I thought that McDonagh was a nobody because he was playing in school (I was 10 or something ok )

3) that Radulov and Patch would be a dynamic duo for years

1. Thought Brady Tkachuk would be nothing more than a 3rd line pest that can fight.

2. Thought Chiasson was going to be a consistent top 6 winger when Sens traded Spezza to Dallas. Turned out to be horrible.

3. Thought Carey Price was done after his poor season. Lol

4. Thought Mark Stone would be a Sens for life and team captain. RIP

I thought Anthony Mantha was going to turn the corner and be a 30 goal, 70 point guy. Yeah...didn't turn out that way.

I also thought Teemu Pulkkinen was going to be a 30 goal scoring powerplay specialist in the NHL. Turns out the guy forgot how to shoot in the NHL on top of never fixing his skating.

And at one time I thought Brendan Smith was going to be better than Jake Gardiner. Hooo boy...

I didn't like Quinn Hughes' game in college, thought he was too much of a rover that wouldn't translate well to the NHL where players are bigger, better, and faster. He has played extremely well in the NHL to date.

Watching Tampa in the playoffs, I had a flashback to a conversation I had online in '09.

The Red Wings were still at their peak and had a reputation for finding players in late rounds. Jonathan Ericsson just came on the scene and had a nice start to his career, including 8 playoff points that year. This was also the time where I started following the draft a bit closer. Hedman was in the draft and was getting hyped up quite a bit as this big, smooth skating, two way defenseman. My conversation essentially boiled down to "So? he's basically Jonathan Ericsson then?"

I think my main point was to hype up Ericsson rather than belittle Hedman. I believe I even doubled down when Ericsson made an international team over Hedman (2010 Olympics?).

But yeah.... turns out Jonathan Ericsson and Vistor Hedman's careers have played out in slightly different ways.

This threads been great. Some real beauties in here. Thanks for all the comments. Great laugh material

Got an old one to put in. Growing up I thought Allan Bester was the best goalie in the world. Yes, that same Allan Bester who Yzerman still laughs at every night before bed.

Saying Vassy couldn't step into Bishops skates....

I know, I know........... I don't deserve your pity........... My son still brings it up, and has gotten more hostile when he pours the salt on the wound.
