Correlation does not equal causation.

I know it's the hfboards meme that deterrence doesn't exist, but it does. What seems to be mistaken for 'proof' that deterrence doesn't exist is examples of times where it was proven that the relationship between deterrence and injury/hit prevention is 1-to-1, which nobody claims.

Has nobody here played like a decently high level of contact hockey? Remember the difference when you had deterrents on your team and when you didn't?

Yah. We just had worse teams.

Everyone likes a team where everyone sticks up for each other. "Deterrents" just go out and rough up the other teams' designated players after the fact.

But that's the value of the Tom Wilsons and the Michael Ferlands. They aren't just designated toughs who have no outcome on the game. They can play with skill guys so that they are out there when these things happen.

It's more about having an answer than it is about actual deterrence. If you have a choice between sitting there and taking it and fighting back, it's probably less demoralizing for someone to do the latter. I can see the argument for it being psychologically advantageous and creating a bit of confidence boosting resilience, maybe (although I would argue that tenacious energy without the physical prowess probably accomplishes the exact same thing).

The idea of it actually protecting star players by making other teams more hesitant to target them is nonsense, though.

Gudbranson was constantly put with the Pettersson line to shelter him. He was out there when things happened. It didn't matter.

Exactly. The point of those types of players is that they're effective at playing hockey. Not some non-existent "protection" factor.
