Didn't this "much better" team get blown out by the Rangers? The key is not letting them get ahead early.

The score was 2-1 heading into the third; anybody's game.

More of a learning experience than anything else.

You should be happy.

One of your guys (Bastian) scored tonight.

Too bad no one else could.

It’s actually incredibly frustrating to watch. I want him gone ASAP. Most predictable player in the league too

Hard to believe you're not a GM somewhere.

Lindy Ruff, who actually played the position and is one of the winningest coaches in league history uses him more than any other defenseman but @TorontoMedia thinks he's no good.

Who should I trust?

Devils score ONE goal and give up two power play goals so let's trash the team's sixth defenseman? Who, by the way, was the first player standing up for a teammate at the end of the game while some of the guys making a heckuva lot more money merely pouted and skated off the ice.

In the first three games the team looked great because of the back pressure from the forwards and the jump in all three zones. When forwards aren't doing that it is the defense and for that matter the goalie look worse than they're playing.

Can't help thinking playing with a 30-year-old partner and then getting to talk to him between shifts has been a boost for Ty Smith.

Vatanen, Butcher and Carrick are likely to see ice time eventually.

But your AHL comment is way off the mark.

The obvious move to me is:

Murray-Subban
Smith-Severson
Butcher-Kulikov

Tennyson is AHL caliber. That should be the group until Sami is back.

We have a much bigger problem if we need 47 save Blackwood to be out of the woods on a nightly basis. The team is awful. We didn’t deserve to win against the rangers... if you watched the game you know that
Did you watch the game? If you did you would know the refs gave the the Rags several PPs off questionable calls.

In context, Isles lost the starting goaltender a few minutes prior to that start of the game because of Clutterbuck. Rags could easily be 0-3.

That's because they don't have Blackwood. We would have got blown out by the rags without Blackwood as well.

I wouldn't get too worked up about this, it's just one game with our (ahl level) backup goalie. Even this great Islanders team just got their asses handed to them by the rangers. It happens, nobody was expecting this team to be a playoff team anyway, and now all of a sudden people are furious that we lost.

I thought the fourth line looked great, mcleod is looking the best he's ever looked (by a lot), Kuokkanen is still struggling but is slowly getting there. I think all of Gusev Zacha and Johnsson are great players, but for whatever reason the chemistry is just not there. But once Bratt is back, we should get new combinations (if not earlier). Thought Hughes looked great, even without points. His line (and I guess the 4th line too) was the only one that could get the puck into the o-zone and even got some pressure going. Also happy that Smith's point streak continued. Oh and at least we ended Varlamov's shutout streak, hope they score more in the next game.

Common sense on this thread. Went back and looked at the goals again.

Could PK been a bit more urgent on the Barzal goal? Probably. Though Gusev either took a bad angle or shouldn't have been matched against him through the neutral zone.

On the second goal McLeod and his line are justifiedly receiving criticism for being caught and losing the puck late in the period. But where was Damon on the play?

The final two goals were both with Bastian and McLeod on the PK. I have liked the play of those two (and the poster who scapegoated Kuokkanen above likely hasn't watched much hockey) but Bastian probably could have been a bit more willing to block the point shot on the deflected goal. The Eberle goal from that spot should probably be saved.

It seems like if the Devils lose you can almost predict which guys will be castigated on these threads.

I don’t understand why the need to play the f*** out of Subban on special teams, especially not the power play.

They’re gonna play him like he’s still the Norris Trophy Subban.

I’m sure he’ll get a contract when his deal expires in 2022, but if this continues from him, he might not get a deal by 2023.

I’m aware that this happened, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that we can’t kill penalties for shit. Again, without MBW they would’ve been 5/6 on the PP. you can’t expect him to do that every game

I had a feeling NYI would be a nightmare matchup over the course of this season, and it certainly appeared that way. Just the tight, structured style they play is tough on such a young team up front IMO. I didn't think they got outworked, which was at least a positive. Definitely can learn a lot playing those guys.

Quick breakdown of who's on the ice for the 10 goals against this year. It's easy to go through the highlights on youtube, some unfortunate goals, some total gong shows.
Subban 7 (3 PK, 1 PP).
Severson 6 (3 PK)
Kulikov 3 (3 PK
Murray 3 (1 PK)
Smith 1 ES
Tennyson 0

is there a nice break in the schedule coming up? even for just a few days? we really need to practice special teams, that much is clear

If you’re referring to me you’d be incorrect. But sure, if you prefer small, average (at best) speed, perimeter playmakers who are allergic to shooting and don’t kill penalties on your 4th line, I guess Kuokkonen is your guy.

I don’t even particularly dislike Janne but if he’s going to stick in this league it’s not gonna be as a 4th liner

Subban doesn't do anything well. He can't skate, the only shots he takes are telegraphed four years in advance and never make it through traffic, he takes dumb penalties every game. He makes the same mistakes every game and has some of the worst situational awareness I've ever seen.

Playing him this much is inexcusable when you could easily pair Murray with Severson as your top unit and give PK some more sheltered minutes.

He's barely a #4 right now and his stock is declining every game. I'm not sure he'll even be in the league in two years. He could get into Cory Schneider territory very quickly.
