I actually don't know why more coaches don't do that. He's fine with a timeout there anyway in case Denver goes on a long drive, so might as well take a shot at a challenge even if he's not likely to win it. If he loses the challenge, it's just like he called timeout. If he wins it, it's a bonus.
Pretty bad clock management by Denver there though. Have to think an immediate time out and running the 4th and 5 play had a better chance than a 64 yarder.
