I am a Bruin's fan and STH and once a year my daughter (who lives in Calif) and I meet somewhere for an away B's game.

This year we are going to Vegas. I am old and never been there but my daughter has.

Looking forward to the visit.

Good Luck to your new team.

Hey guys! Leafs fan here. I'm coming down for a game in October when Vegas faces Buffalo (my buddy is a sabres fan:laugh:), is the Luxar Hotel pretty good to stay at? I know its pretty close to the arena.

I guess you can say I'm a closet Golden Knights fan haha, I'm from London and have season tickets to the London Knights so I know to cheer for any team that has a resemblance to our team in London!

Luxor is nice, older, but nice.

Depending on what you want to do, it can also be convienent to be on the south end of the strip --- easier to navigate.

Back before everyone was charging for parking the south strip was the place to be. Get your car and drive everywhere. Now, I think you want your hotel more centrally located for walking to avoid parking, or you get your conditioning up for some hard core walking.

As an older guy who isn't looking to party or be seen, is Downtown or Fremont Street that much of a worse place to stay than being on the Strip? It seems like even from there, the bus would get me to TMo Arena fairly easily.

If you're coming for a game, I'd suggest just staying at the Rio, The Orleans or any off strip "locals" type of casino. Downtown is just as party as the strip, but I think it's easier to do some things there rather than the strip.

Wherever you stay forget the bus, take an uber or lyft. You'll lose your mind sitting on a bus in Vegas strip traffic. I'd venture to say a bus from downtown to the TMA would take 40 minutes when you factor in all the stops.

Thanks for the tip on the Orleans. That looks like my type of place with the bowling and the gambling and such. Plus not too far away from the rink.

Thanks again!

Moving to Vegas (apartment, safe area help)

Hey guys, I got a teaching job a little north of north las vegas and I have to move there from the Midwest in the next week. I'm a single 28 y/o guy, and I'm looking for a safe neighborhood and apartment complex. What city/area or zipcode should I be looking at, also does anyone have any apartment recommendations in those areas? Or apts to avoid? My budget us around $950 and I'm looking for a safe, well maintained, well managed apartment. Anything else you can tell me would be great. I've heard Summerlin and Centennial Hills so I've been looking at those but apartments seem hit and miss based on reviews. Thanks.

Here's what I tell everyone.

Go in this order as you look for places: West, South, Northwest. Stay around or outside of 215. Don't go anywhere with a North Las Vegas address or anywhere east.

You'll be fine.

$950 is probably the sweet spot if you're looking for a 1BR, anything larger will be higher in a decent neighborhood.

Summerlin and South Henderson are where you want to be, but since you're apparently working on the north side you might take a look at Centennial Hills. Centennial is nice, but it's kind of mish-mash and you get some weirdness among the niceness.

Thanks for the info, as far as Summerlin goes are there any places bordering Summerlin that are good or bad? Any side or part of Summerlin that is preferable?

Summerlin is good in general. However, you'll get a lot of the apartments in the fringes (not actually in Summerlin) that will claim Summerlin. They're not necessarily bad on the fringes of Summerlin, but you're all but guaranteed they're nice and safe in Summerlin. The Howard Hughes Corporation keeps an eye on the Summerlin places so they don't get run down.

Here's all the apartments in Summerlin: http://summerlin.com/upload/widget/118/photo/apartment-guide-map.png If you're not going to be in Summerlin proper, anything west of Durango should be fine.

Essentially, anywhere in the city...stay west of Durango, north of Ann, south of Russell, and out of North Las Vegas and the east side altogether.

Henderson's a little weird, there I'd say stay south of Windmill and west of Stephanie.

Is the west of Durango you're talking about N Durango Dr.? And by around or outside of 215 does that mean stay to the west of it or just be around it in general?

Generally north of the 215 in the north is pretty good. I would make sure to stay west of Aliante Parkway. On the west side the 215 is way west so if you are west of Durango you should be in pretty good shape.

Just around it in general, IMO. You'll want to be south of it in Henderson.

All the streets here pretty much go from one side to the other, so Durango is my dividing line for the entire city for the most part, you can go east of Durango on the south side, but I'd stay south of the 215 if you do.

Like I said, if you're working in North Las Vegas, Summerlin and Centennial Hills are your best bet, but the commute isn't going to be horrendous from anywhere. Las Vegas is a fairly dense city and you can usually get from one side to the other in less than 40 minutes if you know what you're doing, even during the high traffic times.

I'm a little harder on the north side than most people, but that's only because I lived there, left, and realized how much nicer it can be in other parts of town. :)

There are some places in NLV such as Aliante that aren't bad. The nice part of NLV moved north.

My part of NLV was the nice part of NLV 15 years ago. I imagine Aliante will be like Eldorado in the next 15-20 years.

It doesn't matter much when apartment hunting, but I can't imagine I'd purchase a house anywhere but Summerlin or parts of Green Valley/Henderson today. Definitely not Aliante.

I was told getting from Henerson to the top of north las vegas would take 40 mins without traffic and an hour and half with in rush hour, true?

North Las Vegas is a wildcard. If you're a few miles from the highway on Cheyenne, Craig, or even up on the mid-valley parts of the north 215 it can definitely add some time with traffic signals and congestion.

Highway proximity is key.

I'll say it this way, there are few points in this valley that aren't traversed in less than 40 minutes. If you're going from Craig/Simmons to Downtown Henderson it might take longer, but that's not a trip many people make daily.

I would try to stay out of Henderson for that reason. Knowing the general area you are moving to, it is a long drive from Henderson.

It's a long drive, and it gets longer the more time you spend in Las Vegas. I've got family that think nothing of a 70 minute one way commute every day, 30 minutes is about the threshold for "long" here in Las Vegas. I wouldn't live in Henderson and drive to NLV, but if 30 minutes is an acceptable commute, it opens up all of the nicer parts of Henderson.

Otherwise, Summerlin (which is also not a short commute to NLV in Vegas-time) or Centennial Hills are where I'd look. I work 17 minutes from my house and can't get people in my neighborhood to come up to my place because it's "too far."

Personally, I enjoyed living in Henderson and regularly made the 30+ minute commute to Sahara/Decatur. Worked even further down Sahara before that.

Not going to lie, the commute could be a beast at times. But I found the overall quality of life to be more my style. I liked my neighborhood places, liked the value, etc.

With that said, getting to NLV, because of the way the city is shaped, can be difficult from Henderson.

People always ask if I hung out on the strip. It's hard to explain to people that when you live there, the strip just kind of becomes background noise.

I tended to stay in Henderson or the outskirts of town.

That drive gets old....fast. I was driving from Henderson to Summerlin a few times a week for a job I recently left. Traffic on the way home was unbearable. No reason to put yourself in that position when you're wide open about where you can live.

If I were in your shoes, I would look in the Summerlin area just north of Red Rock. Everything you need is within a 15 minute drive. Other than driving to work, you'll barely need to leave that immediate vicinity.

Had I kept that job in Summerlin, I was planning on moving to that area from Henderson.
