Obvious statement is obvious. But the correct response to this transaction is who cares? Not "great asset management". As though it takes skill to get the lowest value return that is possible in a trade.

This is silly. If an asset is borderline worthless anything tangible in return is a net positive, Johnsson for example was a 7th round pick. Most draft busts don’t return anything at all.

I think the Leafs drafted Vessey in the first place, and hired his father for an office job, to woo the brother Vessey. That didn't pan out. They let go of the father and now Vessey. That is all.

When we get a pick, it’s a great thing.

When we give up one, it’s no big deal.

Is that how we are supposed to do it?

Getting a pick for nothing, giving up one for something.
Even you decriers should be able to spot the difference, it's not that difficult.

Waste of a pick drafting him
Who were you sitting on at #158?

Only two of 60 players selected in the sixth and seventh rounds of the 2014 draft have played as much as 100 NHL games. Fifty-six of them have never played an NHL game at all.

What planet are you on, thinking that a sixth-round pick who gets signed to an ELC is a bust? Most sixth-round picks don't even get that far.

Kudos to the Leafs all the way around: firstly, for selecting a player good enough to eventually get an ELC from another team; and, secondly, for turning that sixth into another pick when the player isn't good enough to earn an ELC with the Leafs.

Well done. They get another ticket on a long-shot.

Yeah. Johnsson, Engvall, and Sparks. That's three 7th rounders in the last 6 drafts that look like they'll reach the NHL. And it's not like Korostelev look like a bad 7th rounder either.

Somehow, that's our area of expertise.

The Leafs drafted Nolan in 2014 AND hired his dad on the off chance a current Predators prospect might use his UFA option 2 years later in 2016?

The Leafs drafted a player because they liked him at that spot. The end.

Also, as of now, Jim Vesey is still an amateur scout for the Leafs.

Some people love their conspiracy theories.

Let’s be factual.

Giving up a pick for something that is only useful for a short period of time.

2 second round picks for 5 playoff wins in 2 years. And the assets we got walked (or will walk).

Surprised the title isn’t “Dubas fleeces Oil”. Glad to have the long shot pick for the marginal talent.

And going way back Gunnarson and Stralman were 7th's too

Basically just gives the Leafs another kick at the can ... It's nice to get something back in these situations.

You needed Mike in Barfalo to tell you that?
No, we just shared the same opinion and I thought his post was quite pertinent and deserving of a bump. A rare occurrence but as they say: even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I really don’t expect to get anything for prospects we no longer see upside in like Middleton, Piccinich and Mattinen recently, as loads of drafted players rights expire every year with no return for teams.

However just being able to get anything for a player we weren’t going to sign anyway and clearly didn’t see upside in is always a positive.

It’s laughable seeing posters criticize others for complimenting the trade, yeah it’s not groundbreaking, but it’s still a slick move from Dubas and it’s pretty much impossible to see it as a negative unless you saw NHL upside in Vesey.

That's right.

Hunter's drafting with late round picks ..

All released as unsigned and UFA or re-entering the draft as they went unsigned.

So with Vesey at least we get another opportunity to make a better pick.

We should bring back the amateur scouts before Mark Hunter arrived to make good use of the Vesey reclamation pick.

That is what we're looking for from a 7th round pick :wg:

This.

It's a real minor trade but a major good sign.

Dubas is looking at every option, no matter how small or minor. He's also ready to go! Could be a great summer
Is it known that the Oilers didn't approach Dubas about this?
To me that seems more likely.

I would agree that seems more likely because why would a team give up anything for an NCAA drafted player if the team who drafted him didn't plan on signing them to an ELC deal, especially if they are going to become a UFA.
