I know butler coming here is a long shot and all but would the raptors have the pieces to match or beat a Richardson + Abedayo+ pick offer the wolves want from the heat?

I can't imagine Miami doing that deal

Probably OG + Siakam if you're looking for an equivalency but won't even work from a salary standpoint

I don't see a value and salary match between Toronto and Minnesota that makes sense. The T-Wolves aren't taking pricey deals back like Ibaka/Powell that the Raptors would need to match the $$$, and the Raptors aren't giving up either current core pieces (Lowry) or cheap future pieces (OG, Siakam, Wright/VanVleet) back to Minnesota without including some cap-ballast that the Timberwolves won't want (thus driving up the price from the Raptors side)

And that's before even getting into the potential that Minny wants to package Dieng with Butler to shed that contract (which then the Raptors really can't afford.)

Feel like Lowry-Leonard is going to be a very underrated duo this season that'll surprise many people. Lowry isn't flashy with his game but he's a tank that can do a little bit of everything at an elite level. Leonard might in line to win his first MVP if the Raptors win 55+ games. It'll come down to him or Lebron IMO if the Lakers can win 50 and make the playoffs.

What the **** kind of stupid nonsense is Jack on about? He dismisses the modern overstatement of "culture" as a thing in sports, then spends 5 minutes expounding on what essentially amounts to the stupid "culture" argument by noting that JA Happ went to the Yankees and "there's a different level of expectation there."

He was a (marginally) better pitcher with the Blue Jays than he has been with the Yankees. The difference is basically negligible, but if you want to make a thing out of it, the edge is to 2018 Jays Happ vs 2018 Yankees Happ.

meanwhile, as a hot take, Kawhi looks disengaged on the bench. He doesn't want to be in Canada and this whole season is going to be a failure :sarcasm:

That is really dumb. Who said that?

That is really dumb. Who said that?

The normally reliable Jack Armstrong. He was talking about the acquisition of Leonard/Green and while he conceded that there's some benefit to having guys come from a winning culture in San Antonio and bringing a fresh persepctive to the Raptors, he also said that 'culture' talk was usually hugely overrated when it came to the impact of acquired players and that too many people rely on using it as an explainer for moves or changes in team fortune when there are other more important factors in play.

Then not 5 minutes later he was talking about differences in playing for different organizations and he draws the parallel to baseball with JA Happ going from the Blue Jays to the Yankees by noting that "there's a different level of expectation" in New York that's going to drive him to play better because New York demands it, basically playing directly into the same sort of "winning culture" argument that he dismissed a few minutes prior.

The noting about Happ's stats was my own addition. Yankee Happ had a far superior ERA, but basically everything else that's actually under his control about his time split between the two teams tilts in favor of the Blue Jays except walk rate. So the vaunted Yankee winning culture didn't make Happ work harder or meet higher expectations. The Yankee D simply covered better for what was ultimately worse performance on the mound.

Seeing that new sportsnet Raptors commercial. Now I'm pumped for the new season.

What's the rap song playing during the commercial?

The Jimmy Butler saga continues in Minnesota as he took to the court for his first practice and used said practice and a post-game interview to basically eviscerate management, ownership, and (most disturbingly) his teammates. While basically saying that it's not his fault if he acts like a tool because he can't help it, and he tries hard and wants to win and everyone else is the problem.

I wouldn't want him anywhere near the Raptors. He burned his bridges in Chicago. He's burning his bridges in Minnesota. He puts all this stuff on everyone else not being up to his standards of competitiveness, but at the end of the day there are basically 2 kinds of leaders out there: the kind that do it because they want everyone to do their best and succeed, and the kind that do it because they egotistically believe that they're the only one who can get the job done because everyone else is an incompetent, gibbering boob. Butler seems to be intent on cementing himself in the latter category.

While I dont doubt Butler is a goof, could be a tactic by his camp to get him dealt. No one is going to pay the worth for him, but if he trashes ownership publicly, might cheapen the deal and get him out.

There's no way a player helps his case by acting like this. If anything he's going to scare teams off that look at him and realize that he's a nutter who will throw everyone else under the bus to cover for his ego and maturity issues. Couple that with the fact that he talks about being all about winning, but made it known that his preferred trade destinations had less to do with winning and more to do with who could get him paid, and I doubt he's actually thinking about helping his case. Rather he probably is so hyped on himself that he doesn't even comprehend how what he's doing hurts it.

A Quebec group eyes an NBA expansion team.

https://www.tsn.ca/quebec-group-eyes-nba-expansion-team-1.1189836
MONTREAL — A Quebec group wants to bring an NBA team to Montreal even though the league has no current plans to expand.

The business group is led by former federal cabinet minister and senator Michael Fortier. He said Wednesday he has spoken with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, adding that his group has "taken the decision to prepare for when expansion does take place." The group has been meeting with potential Canadian and foreign investors.

Fortier estimated a franchise would cost $1.5 billion to $2 billion, but no public funding would be required. He says Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson is open to an NBA team playing at the NHL club's Bell Centre.

The favourite for an NBA expansion team is Seattle, which lost the SuperSonics to Oklahoma City in 2008.

This Jimmy Butler nonsense is reaching sideshow critical mass.

Now Butler says he held a players-only meeting after practice was cancelled (apparently on account of his nonsense yesterday) to clear the air and say that "he'll still play with them" (which, phrased like that, totally doesn't sound like a backhanded, patronizing, chest-thumping comment ) only for a tweet from Jeff Teague to appear and refute that entire notion.

And now there are late-breaking reports that Giorgui Dieng (I'm not sure how to spell his name) is tweeting other unspecified things about the incident as well.

There are also reports that internally the T'Wolves ownership/management are a little miffed that Tom Thibodeau hasn't really put his foot down to control the situation and there's talk that they might just jettison him too for letting things get this bad and making no attempt to prevent it.

Kids, remember the immortal words of Terrell Owens:
