There are posters on these boards that will argue that Paul is no better than a 4th liner but will pencil Andrei Kuzmenko into the top 6 before he's ever played an NHL game.

Where you "slot" players in a Excel spreadsheet isn't what matters. The minutes, and situations, they play in are what matters.

Nick Paul averaged the 5th most ice time out of all our forwards last year. This year, he's #6.

He's not in any way a 4th liner.
Completely agree on Kuzmenko.

I think we need to stop evaluating our players against our players. It's messing up the perspective. We have many bad players still and zero depth. Maybe look at other teams construction and salary hierarchy. If we stay the course we might not make the playoffs for the next two years. Putting a lot of faith in home grown rookies fixing all the teams problems. The last two summers/trade deadline was the opportunity to quietly add quality players to forward and defence to support all the rookies. This year Dorion announces that's what he is going to do, possibly raising prices for himself. Things are starting to look very difficult for this club. Hope I'm wrong.

I could 100% see a Rasmussen for Brannstrom deal. Doirion loves a big center and we dont really have one right now
But Yzerman doesn't like small d-men, you can forget about trading Brannstrom or Mete to Detroit.

Every defenseman acquired by Yzerman in Tampa & Detroit.

IF Paul doesn't resign, then NYR seems like a no-brainer landing spot for him.

I'm struggling to see where the "Paul is a 4th liner" narrative has sprung from. He is clearly a third liner in my eyes and has contract comparables in Lowry and Goodrow. 2.5 isn't an overpayment, it's a really good deal for us.

Paul probably genuinely loves Ottawa but the NHL is a business and I don't think Ottawa is going to pay him what he wants. Especially not when we have so many other guys to sign (Norris, Forenton, Pinto in a year, etc)

This may come down to Ottawa giving a final offer of something like 2.5M x 4 years and if that doesn't get it done they could mutually decide to trade him and let him see what he can get in UFA while Ottawa agrees to leave that offer on the table through the first couple weeks of FA period.

There are more bigger d-men than small d-men, but small d-men are not rare. Yzerman builded a massive defense in Tampa and he is doing the same Detroit, small d-men are warm bodies and AHL depth pieces in Yzerplan.

Yzerman himself was a smallish forward and he played lengthy playoff series against guys like Pronger, Stevens, Foote, Daneyko etc.. and through his own experience he knows just how hard is to play against guys like that. Doesn't matter if you are big or small forward, you're in trouble with big d-men. That is the reason why Yzerman doesn't sign, draft or trade small d-men imo.

So far Stralman has been only d-man under 6'0'' who has had a top-4 role in Yzerman's team.

I think its more complex than that though. If Zadina value around the league is say a 2nd rounder and Ottawa is willing to swap brannstrom for him then Yzerman might prefer that option as you get someone who can play now and you can see his potential instantly. Additionally you would def prefer to have big mobile defensemen like say Chychrun but that price for them is sky high so that might not be an option.

Would Zadina be able to get a Chyrchrun back without a significant add? probably no chance
it really is hard to say without knowing what the value of the two players are league wide aswell as what other moves they have planned
