New idea... Trade Spezza to the government for 100 billion dollars. Win win trade. Melnyk can afford all the Clarkson's he's ever dreamed of while we cure cancer at the same time.

Spezza on his game fits this system perfectly hell we need more high end players

Spezza doesn't play a 200 foot game so it doesn't fit this team perfectly. He is a defensive liability, he is lazy and his physical play and willingness to battle for loose pucks along the boards is almost non existent.

Spezza is a one dimensional player. Albeit is sole dimension (offence) is very high end.

The best types of centre's for MacLean's system are Toews, Richards, Bergeron and Kesler. We can afford to have less high end offensive players if everyone is committed to playing defense, battling hard for space and pucks and being aggressive on the forecheck. We stand a much better chance of winning a championship with a roster and playing style similar to the Bruins then to have a run and gun high offence system.

Toronto has a few players I'd try to get.

Kadri or Rielly would be a great principal return for Spezza, but do the Leafs actually trade one of those guys away?

Why would the Flyers ever give up Simmonds? Why would the Jets give up Kane?

Or Colorado giving up Landeskog for Spezza? That's laughable.

There are rumors that Chevaldayoff has been taking inquiries for Kane and that he would consider parting with him if the return was something substantial.

There has been some speculation from Flyers fans that one of Simmonds or Hartnell will get traded this season because they play a similar style and both have been struggling.

Landeskog was simply a pipe dream.

Just let the guy have an sub-par season.

If he comes back next season and puts up 90 points, then a lot of you are gonna look not smart.

So if we trade Spezza, we need to factor in the teams that he would likely waive his no trade clause for. The following are the teams that I think he might consider being traded to and the potential trade targets from those teams.

Highly Likely To Waive His No Trade Clause For

LA Kings
Trade Targets: Mike Richards, Kyle Clifford, Matt Greene, Slava Voynov, 2015 1st

Vancouver Canucks
Trade Targets: Ryan Kesler, Kevin Bieksa, Zack Kassian, Bo Horvat, 2015 1st

Chicago Blackhawks
Trade Targets: Marian hossa, Patrick Sharp, Andrew Shaw, Brandon Saad, Mark McNeil, 2015 1st

St Louis Blues
Trade Targets: David Backes, T.J. Oshie, Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk, Jaden Schwartz, 2015 1st

Pittsburgh Penguins
Trade Targets: James Neal, Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik, Brandon Sutter, Beau Bennett, 2015 1st

Potentially Willing to Waive His No Trade Clause For

Philadelphia Flyers
Trade Targets: Wayne Simmonds, Jakub Voracek, Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Samuel Morin, Scott Laughton, 2015 1st

New York Rangers
Trade Targets: Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan, Derek Brassard, Derek Dorsett, J.T. Miller, Chris Kreider, Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi, Marc Staal, 2015 1st

Colorado Avalanche
Trade Targets: Ryan O'Reilly, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan Mackinnon, Erik Johnson, Duncan Siemens, 2015 1st

Winnipeg Jets
Trade Targets: Evander Kane, Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, Zach Bogosian, 2015 1st

If We Trade Spezza

The real challenge in dealing Spezza is finding a team that has:
A) The Assets Ottawa Wants
B) Enough Cap space to get him and re-sign him
C) Is at the right point as a team where acquiring him makes sense

Just Spezza:
1. Hornqvist + Josi
2. Vanek + Young D Prospect + 3rd
3. Hagelin + Del Zotto + 2nd
4. Boedker + Morris
5. Boedker + Klesla (DUMP) + Stone

Pipe Dreams (Ottawa adds Prince OR Puempel):
1. Oshie
2. Wheeler OR Ladd

Looking through NHLnumbers & trying to think about each teams position in development this is what I come up with.

Ottawa seeks a 200 foot winger to can put up 50-60 points (at least potentially) and compete hard at both ends of the rink. The more established guys cost more, the younger or higher risk acquisitions cost less.

Vanek is just sort of an interesting thought. He fills a top line need at the winger position but isn't necessarily a 2-way player. Also of course he could leave, but Spezza is maybe something the Islanders really need to be a playoff team again similar to how they needed Yashin.

Rangers seems most likely. which makes it curious that there was speculation about a trade with the rangers up until spezza is out with injury and then garrioch tweets right after the news, that there is no trade on the burners.
It would unite spezza with nash which would obviously be of interest to them.

1. Send Pageau to Bingo where he belongs & replace him with Grant who is much harder to play against.
2. Trade Condra & Corvo for picks or pucks, this team doesn't need either any more.
3. Call up Mark Stone & see if he can play with Spezza, if he can we could have another scoring combo.
4. Place Phillips as the 7th defenceman on this roster, the other six make less mistakes with the exception of Karlsson who has to cut down on his give aways.
5. Take less penalties which should reduce the shots on goal, which should reduce the goals against.
6. Both goalies have to be much, much better especially Anderson if this team wants to make a run.

Then simple. We trade for Toews or Bergeron or Richards! So easy!

Ryan O'Reilly would be a good target and there might be a chance that they part with him for Spezza. The rest are pretty much guaranteed to not get traded.

Well we simply target players that are built in a similar mold. Turris is starting to turn himself into a similar player to those three. If Zibanejad and Smith keep growing and developing their offensive games, they could be as well. Smith keeps could end up being a 40-50 point Mike Richards type.

You don't know that.

Back surgery/Back injury, knee injury, nagging groin injury. All three hurt skating ability. Now add the fact Spezza has always had average skating ability. His skating will get better but will probably remain below average. He's not getting 90 points being a step behind everyone.

It is much more probable than him putting up 90 points.

0.95 points per game over the past 5 seasons. So, like an average of 79 points per 82.

It's not all that outrageous unless you are one of those guys who believe Spezza isn't just struggling but a much worse player than in years previous.

I wouldn't bet on 90 points, but I wouldn't be surprised either.

You don't know that.

That's just it. It hasn't looked good this season, but it's possible that SPezza will feel better then ever going into next year.

It's just as possible that injuries have slowed him down, but nobody knows for sure.

Even I don't think so & I've been Smith's biggest fan on here while so many wanted him traded. I think Smith's upside is 30-40 range at the most, he just isn't as dynamic as Richards who has been a winner everywhere he has played. IMO Mark Stone would make a huge difference to this team if he could jell with Spezza to create another scoring combo. The Turris line & the Zibanejad line we saw last are two good lines & if we could find a partner for Spezza like Stone & Greening for example it could really improve Ottawa's offense.

We also saw a good puck moving pairing in Wiercioch & Ceci who makes Corvo expendable. This team has the parts already they just need to find the right combinations & begin to play at the level we expect consistently & of course they need NHL calibre goaltending.
