would you guys take on Callahan's ugly contract if it meant getting Drouin without giving up much?

something like Emelin/minny 2nd for Callahan/Drouin...

if the Bolts are serious about trying to keep Stamkos, and/or find a way to keep Palat/Kucherov/Nemestikov/Killorn/Johnson/Hedman... all of which who need new deals, with raises, this year or next, you'd think Callahan's 5.8M/per will have to go.

It's a big salary, with 4 years left (for a guy who plays a style prone to injury/breaking down)... but on the plus side, Callahan absolutely is a guy who contributes even when the points aren't there. He can play anywhere in the 4 lines, and it would mean adding Drouin without giving up any major assets.

not sure i'd pull that trigger, but i'd be much more likely to consider adding Drouin that way, than by giving up 2 quality young/cheap assets.

That has about 0 chances of happening. Yzerman & co. were talking young elite RD some time ago with some interest from other teams. Do you really think offers are going to drop like a rock like that?

If we can make a trade around Dd and fucale for edler would be perfect or.even emelin instead.

That's actually no a bad offer. Problem is, Vrbata just isn't all that valuable to us right now. I would rather just make a play for Edler, particularly in the off season so he potentially ruin a top five draft pick.

Yeah, not a fan of spending over 30 million on defence. Brutal cap management.

We should do

Desharnais for Hartnell or Lupul

Not a hater of desharnais. But realistically does he actually fit in any top 6 on any NHL club?

Is he an upgrade to any club's top six? I mean the Leafs maybe?? But they are doing their best to win the draft lottery.

So has it dawned on the Desharnais lovers that he isn't necessarily 'the' problem but symbolically a problem?

An NHL roster built with such a horrid top 6 that DD is an option sure points to the main issues this team has.

i'd rather keep DD and just acquire Hartnell, DD is a good 3C.. we just need to find a coach who wont overplay him

Depends how much they'd valued freeing up that 6M in cap space for next 4 years... Coupled with the reality sinking in that the stalemate they're in with Drouin is plummeting his value daily.

It's funny (read: sad) how these threads started off this year looking for targets to add at the deadline and it's slowly become "what can we sell at the deadline".

2 ''big'' trades I'd look to make in order to change the face of our forwards group. Those might not be popular…

:habs

Jason Pominville (25% retained)

:wild

David Desharnais

--> Pominville = 4.2M until 2018-2019 & DD= 3.5m until 2016-2017

:habs

Tomas Tatar

:wings

Nathan Beaulieu

--> Tatar= 2.75M until 2016-2017 & Beaulieu = 1M. until 2016-2017

Then

Tomas Fleischmann and Tom Gilbert for whatever picks they can get.

We roll with this :

Pacioretty-Plekanec-Gallagher
Tatar-Galchenyuk-Pominville
Carr-Eller-Andrighetto
DSP-Mitchell-Weise

Markov-Subban
Emelin-Petry
Barberio-Pateryn

I wouldn't be totally against this. Id just hold on to Gilbert if moving Beaulieu so having 7 dmen and Gilbert is great depth him and Pateryn would rotate the #6 spot.

All positives out of these IMO.

- Desharnais gone and cant be over used by Therrien anymore.
- Galchenyuk goes back to Center with two capable wingers.
- Eller goes back to Center in 3rd line duties where his work load and capabilities are.
- Pateryn sees more ice time and still have 3 LHD / 3 RHD plus a good rotating #6 spot.
- Top 6 would actually be completed. Have a 2nd line RW and LW who play their naturally.

One thing I noticed is Desharnais or Eller have to go.

I just have been reading for weeks. Everyone is saying Desharnais is at best a 3rd line center. Then right after Eller is at best a 3rd line center.

Its actually become a problem when you think about it that Bergevin should address at the deadline.

Either way they are screwed. Because if one of them plays 3rd line center. They other is forced to play top 6 minutes where they are not comfortable. Like Eller on the LW in the top 6 but better at center and at 3rd line C. Desharnais not good enough against top teams centers should go to the 3rd slot.

Overall if one of them go to the 3rd slot Center the other is playing over their capabilities. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

DD will not go anywhere, MT loves his mini mee,

DD gets all the big minutes, pp time, and desperation moves, DD is the man.

on any other team DD would be a 4th liner, at best

^ And if all those players walk on July 1st?
Then as long as we replace Therrien we will still be playing better hockey than we are now.
Plus we have 20.5 mil to find what we need to fill those 3 slots on the UFA market.
Life is risk, and that's what the GM gets paid for. Unfortunately our current GM has a yellow streak a mile wide down his back where his spine should be.
I don't.
Also you gauge and talk and get a feel for the players you are trading for and read the possibilities of them re-signing or walking.
I honestly think if we offered Stamkos 9-9.5 per yr for 5 yrs, he'd take it. Same with Ladd at 6.5 for 5 yrs.
Only one I see as iffy is Hanhuis, and if needed we should be able to find a replacement on the market.
Plus if the Cap goes up to the expected 73 mil, we have 3.5mil extra for contingencies.

We should do

Desharnais for Hartnell or Lupul

If Hartnell or Lupul were UFA's to be I'd be all for that. Lupul has 2 years @ 5.25M cap hit left after this season and Hartnell has 3 years @ 4.75M cap hit after this season.

Id rather the Habs not add more salary beyond next year and to spend it elsewhere instead of tying up salary in 2 older guys who are not even very good right now.

I'd rather MB just trade DD for any pick he can get instead of taking on Hartnell's and Lupul's future salary maybe handcuffing the team adding a better piece.

Bergevin already made it clear that he won't trade a young guy that will help this team for years to come for short term answers.
