Tippett is a much better prospect than Heineman.
The Flames pick is this year, and they're high in the standings.
The Panthers pick is in 2024, who knows where they'll be then - they could be in the lottery.

No way of knowing for sure, but I definitely think we jumped the gun on the Toffoli trade.

It's a top 10 protected pick no?

Also, Tippet at 23 still looks like a long shot to be a nhler, frankly I wouldn't trade Heineman for him.

Cult of personality? What personality does Hughes have, exactly? He looks and sounds like a bland accountant or a tax specialist. No one would be remotely interested in the guy if he weren’t occupying a fishbowl of a job within the most prestigious org. in hockey.

Who wants to emulate his shaved head look? What, you don’t like his plain grey and charcoal suits? What a trendsetter, we should all be smitten by his “cult of personality.”

These new guys are building a resume. I’d rather wait til I’ve seen more of a track record to better appreciate if and how they will have implemented their strategy. That’s my prerogative.

WTF are you on about “blind and partisan cheerleaders”? What are you even insinuating? Just because some us want to give these new guys the benefit of the doubt doesn’t mean we deserve to be referred to by your gratuitous, derogatory terms, which you clearly pulled out of your ass.

What is your point bringing in other slow players still on the team? That’s a pretty disingenuous comment when they are still in the early days of their tenure and when they’ve understandably only made two major deals so far. There are evidently other factors at play that determine who gets traded when and for what return and which concessions, the case arising. Were you expecting all slow players to get traded at one time? Or that they should have all had been dealt by now?

You know nothing about those of us you are attacking. Most of us in here started off the same way with Bergevin. When we realized that his actions did not match his words and when we saw there was enough of a track record to judge him, we judged him with the harshness he deserved.

I see the same situation here. I believe most in here will give Hughes and Gorton some rope but if we see them veer off course and act incompetently, we’ll call them on it. Also, we’ll commend them if they deserve it.

If you choose to micro-analyze every move without a larger body of work in place, then that’s your prerogative. Just don’t come in with implied derogatory associations and empty conclusions regarding those of us who are taking a different approach.

If Hughes is really looking for ways to restructure the Habs salary cap, just about everybody should be in play. I don't like the ideal of only moving certain guys. I've been googling rumors and so far this is what I've found regarding Habs players. Not sure how reliable all these sources are and some might just speculation from the various publications I read.

Artturi Lehkonen - Capitals and Rangers have shown interest.
Joel Armia - Avalanche were poking around earlier in the season.
Mike Hoffman - Rangers apparently had called about him.
Jonathan Drouin - Predators had shown interest prior to his injury.
Jeff Petry - Wings and Stars were rumored destinations.
Brett Kulak - Kings and Flames are believed to have called.
Christian Dvorak - Wild were interested, but concerned about long term cap ramifications.

Anybody read anything else?

If someone arrived with a massive overpayment, then of course but that can be said for every player in the league

We're a rebuilding team. The vets are all available. That can't be said for non-rebuilding teams.

Every team is concerned about cap ramifications and KH made it known he is not accepting cap dumps because of our own cap.

That’s why players with term rarely get moved at the TDL. Those players will be available to trade in summer or at another TDL, and prices keep going up every year.

Not sure why you’ve reacted this way.

Clearly there was a chunk of Habs fandom that was inappropriately enamoured with Bergevin, who could do no wrong in their eyes. I followed the Habs on multiple platforms and it was obvious that at some point the hype had outpaced even the man himself. I never said anyone in specific, so it’s not a pointed comment just a general one.

Moving on…

So far we have the good return in Chiarot and the not particularly good return on Toffoli. I’m gonna stick to my guns on that because we’ve already seen enough trades in this period to know what’s been a good haul and a less good haul. It’s implausible for me to imagine Toffoli would move for less if he was dealt today.

It isn’t about evaluating Hughes’ worthiness as a GM.

But if he’s saying there won’t be a big sell-off, and we believe him when he says it (we have no reason not to believe him), I think it’s a bit suspect that he traded pretty much our best veteran winger on the best contract and didn’t move any of the other ones.

If it was more expedient to move Toffoli now and then work on the other files that’s one thing but it still doesn’t change the first argument: the return was lukewarm.

So on both levels — the return and the trade itself — I’m happy to go against the grain a bit and say “not blown away by this one, folks.”

Other than Chiarot and Kulak, I would have moved any of Weber, Price, Armia, Byron, Petry, Gallagher, Hoffman, Dvorak or Drouin before moving Toffoli. Granted it’s either impossibly to unlikely to move some of those names, and I won’t hold that against Hughes, but Toffoli would’ve been one of the last ones I’d move not the friggin first.

And since he’s saying there won’t be a big firesale… what the heck was the point of moving Toffoli in the first place? There are worst misfits than Toffoli (Drouin, Dvorak), there are slower players (Armia, Gallagher), less consistent ones (Hoffman), etc

Notice how Kent didn't have his mask on and as soon as he answered, he put the mask on.

For me it's the reaction of Gorton who start looking at this phone, made a hand gesture and then nervously start playing with his bottle.....not sure what to make of it. Good news, bad news...don't know, seems impatient to me.

Not that I heard anything but Jake Allen must be very interesting for the Leafs and Edmonton who were trying to get Fleury.

I think Kulak goes to Toronto when they miss on Giordano for like a 2nd, and Lehkonen to the Rangers for a RD prospect (Lundkvist)+.

My guess Lehkonen and Kulak traded at tdl.

Then work on moving Drouin, Petry and Dvorak in offseason

Pretty simple. Your "cheerleader" comment was out of line. I gave a detailed reply on purpose so you'd see that.

I see that I wasted my time, so I'll know better next time.

Yeah, moving on and far away at the same time. Have a good one.
