Didn't I write that there is nothing wrong about being optimistic, even if overly so ?

Why are you arguing against shadows ?

I don't think it's optimistic at all, it's realistic. It's what is going to happen. Dubas has done everything he said he would do, it's not going to be abandoned all of the sudden now.

I just did the armchair GM thing. Zaitsev and Brown go, sign a cheap RD (like 1.5 million or under) and the team is under the cap.
Where exactly does Zaitsev go and what picks are going with him? Also he will need to be replaced and that will be a few million in itself.

Nylander is basically to 7M. Not 6.9. 6,96 actually. Assuming Johnsson and Kapanen sign for 6.25 jointly, Marner at just 9M( I think he is getting conservatively 1M more) and Lindholm to taking a pay cut. I find it hard seeing the Leafs expecting to ice that defence and expecting to be a true contender. Just illustrates how much a crunch the Leafs are currently in. Changes to the roster are in the offing this summer I would say.

Ouu I was close, I knew it would end in .something34

are you just looking through this thread trying to **** on leafs fans? that’s sad man, do something better with your day

Yep, you almost had it! Very little looking required, you were on the first page

No, with the fodder in here, that would be a full time job....and I already have one

Marleau also doesn't have a cup so it's tough to imagine him waiving if he thinks the leafs can contend.

Exactly. Wishful thinking to assume he would waive, unless you're sending him as a rental somewhere for a run. But then the list of teams that can afford 6.25m are pretty small.

They will not be a top 4 D, they will have to be a 5-6.

You have to take a hit somewhere. Other option is Kapanen gets dished for a D.
I agree something will have to give but I'm thinking Nylander is what goes for a top 4 RHD. Maybe somebody will take Zaitsev with Nylander for a top 4 RHD and a pick or prospect? Leafs just have too many dollars invested in the forwards next year in my opinion.

I can see why people say that, but I don't buy it. You don't trade young elite talent, you will never get fair return. That is stupid Oilers thinking.

In football some teams are great on D, some on O. I think, with the cap, the NHL may be headed there. It's worth a try.

we know this. this year they are paying 2 players 2m that are worth ~20m.

Well you could trade Nylander for an equally young defender nobody says you have to trade him for a vet? As long as the defender is 25 and under and signed long term I'd think you'd be happy. Howevr I see the Leafs allure of wanting to keep all the kids but I think it's a mistake not improving the D more.

Kessel $1.2M ?

No overage ? Probably.

But Matthews and Marner will get their $3.7M this year.

That leaves them with a margin of $620K.

Hopefully, Lindholm/Oz will not meet their bonus targets ($1.7M is possible, but very unlikely).

No overage, because they aren't using Horton on LTIR this year. Kessel's is included in Cap Friendly.

Marleau seems to be the favourite guy to be pushed out and some act like it's going to be very easy.

a) If I'm not completely mistaken he's a strong leader on that lineup, with being close to the young franchise players.
b) He has full controll of his contract, if he doesn't win the Cup why would he want to give up his last shot of it?

Also teams will be looking at Zaitsev as a pure cap dump from Toronto, yet they can get something in return for him?

$85M is 99.9% certain to be above the cap.

& That's with Marner at 9M.

Zaitsev is a bad contract. No one pays a bottom pairing dman 4.5 million and considers that good value.
Except hes not a bottom pairing dman.

Hes second pairing on most teams. Top pairing on trash teams like the oilers and habs.

Or the sens. Hed be the sens best dman. And no one will sign with the sens on purpose so UFAs are not really an option for them.

To put into perspective how bad Zaitsev's caphit is.... Here is a comparison with bonafide 3rd pairing dman Jordie Benn.
View attachment 183103

And this is also bearing in mind that Zaitsev has the worst stats of all Leafs dmen who are playing more than 18 mins / night.

Jordie Benn should be paid 6M / season when compared to Zaitsev!!!!!
Team rel stats..... yiu understand its easier to get better team rel stats when you play for a terrible team right?
