That's what the guys at the Athletic had. They know all the thing Mikheyev can do. He played fewer games than those guys and is older.
The Athletic is as worthless as the Hockey News. They know nothing. He should have got at least 3 mil or gone for 1 year and left.

Mikheyev really didn't have much leverage going into arbitration given his small sample size and the financial climate. I think this is a little richer than what he might have been awarded but doesn't risk the relationship between player and team.
The financial climate is irrelevant.

This is higher than what The Athletic thought he would get. They noted his older age vs comps, low sample and 0.59 PPG and Seigel pegged him at $1.2m for two years while Mirtle was at $1.25m/2.

2017 Sven Andrighetto got two years and a $1.4 million 24 points in 46 games (0.52).

Zach Aston-Reese’s production over his first 59 NHL games (23 points, 0.39 per game) when he received a cap hit of only $1 million from Pittsburgh on a two-year contract

Nicolas Aube-Kubel’s two-year deal last month came with a $1.075 million cap hit. He had 15 points in 36 games this past season (0.42 per game).

Mikheyev has a higher PPG, plays excellent PK minutes, and the contract bought out a UFA year.

All of the guys you mentioned were or will be RFAs at the end of their deals.

The contract didn't buy out a UFA year, it walked him to UFA. A one year deal would have meant he was an RFA again next year.

Oh the Athletic said it. Might as well carve it in stone!
This put a smile on my face, good stuff.

As much as I like all the guys over at The Athletic, I refuse to pay to read theirs or anyone elses stuff online. It's a slippery slope once we start paying for opinion pieces from journalists. Next thing we know five years down the road we'll be paying a subscription for daily weather.

Great deal for him though: backloaded contract minimizes amount taken away by escrow perfectly.

Moreover he becomes UFA after the new tv contract is agreed to and caps begin rising. With Toronto’s cap dilemmas he is likely to be a top 6 forward and continue his production then get paid as a UFa

Ah yes, you are right.

It slipped my mind that they offered him a 2-year deal in arbitration. Only possible if he has two years of RFA status.

The logic still applies though.

A player loses most of his negotiation ability if the contract expires with him being an RFA. This is why all of the guys you mentioned took cheaper deals. Mikheyev himself would have taken a reduced deal on a 1-year contract for this reason.

He would have been given 1.85m/year in arb so it’s a slight discount but nothing to write home about. In all, a good deal for a player that probably would be making around 3m given his production before the injury

EvolvingHockey who has a good track record for these predictions interestingly had him at closer to 2 mil aav
